@bamfic It's much better. Looks like my roommate is going to face some issues trying to sync his KeePass file over Google Drive, since Google promised a Linux client back in 2012 but never delivered on it, and google-drive-ocamlfuse requires command line judo skills that he lacks.

Okay, so Ubuntu Desktop is shit. Let's try Linux Mint. If it fucks up in the same way Ubuntu did, I'm not giving Linux on the desktop another chance.

@MightyPork I was originally a Debian user looking for a Debian that didn't have ancient packages. Ubuntu Server works excellently for this. Not so impressed with Ubuntu Desktop, but am not familiar with any other APT based distro that has decent UX.

@tomasekeli So long as nobody fixes it in the userland tools, it's going to remain a problem, and if such a trivial thing hasn't been fixed yet, it'll never be fixed. Somebody's probably refusing to fix it because it will break something else.

Also, I've encountered codebases that won't build on a case-insensitive file system.

@MightyPork I have used it many times before and had it as a desktop OS a while ago and it worked fine. As I just tooted above, it NOW seems to have turned into garbage.

This actually used to work BETTER a few releases ago, and now everything seems to be shit. Oh, and no offer to install faster GPU driver, and also, whole OS froze for a minute or two at one point with no explanation.

Tried to install Ubuntu on my roomie's secondary computer. First, it failed to install GRUB, so I had to rescue it with boot-repair through Terminal. Then, VLC failed to launch, and I had to fix that through the Terminal. Latest problem? Audio in Ubuntu but no audio in VLC. The most mainstream open source video player on what is supposedly the simplest Linux distribution, and this is the result? Linux is still not ready for the desktop. Sorry, folks.

@tomasekeli And while we're at it, I happen to like file systems that are case sensitive. It's annoying to be unable to rename a file from, say, rEADME to README without first renaming it to something completely different. I think I like case sensitive things because I'm sensitive about case. Of course, people will differ in this respect, but it would seem that the people who design languages and operating systems feel about the same way about this as I do, so...

@tomasekeli There are people who want it that way, at least for Algol-style OOP languages, and I'm one of them. I like that class names are distinguished by an uppercase first letter, that constants are all uppercase, that variable names start with a lowercase letter, etc. Those conventions mean that I can have a variable 'user' of the class 'User', because sometimes, all you need is a boring but clearly named variable.

To give this curve some context: I am 192 cm (6'4") tall. At my height, I should ideally weigh less than 92 kg (203 lbs; overweight limit) and no more than 110 kg (243 lbs; obesity limit), so I'm still at least 20 kg away from merely being overweight. But, I feel much better even now. It's easier to move around, and I'm getting compliments on my improved appearance.

They always use the same filter on photos in tourist brochures. Contrast reduction, especially in shaded parts of the image, combined with heavy amounts of saturation ("Vibrance" filter). Also, make sure to take photos on a sunny summer afternoon, when the colour palette is warm and bright.

I do it to my own holiday shots because it looks great, but it's hilarious to see other people do it now, because it's painfully obvious how they did it.

@tomasekeli And sometimes, you will assign things to local variables inside of functions just for brevity, in which case assigning a long name would kind of go against the purpose, and again, if you establish the context for that 'user' variable 5 lines further up, it's fine.

@tomasekeli Well, firstly, I'm not a fan of underscores and prefer CamelCase or dashes. Most languages except Lisp interprets dashes as subtraction, so that leaves CamelCase in most cases.

Secondly, if it's obvious what kind of user we're talking about, there's no need to specify. If it's not obvious, perhaps the 'user' variable should live inside of an object that gives you some context, for example session.user (equivalent to your currently_logged_in).

@ady_luimeme I don't really think in terms of goals when I toot. I just share my thoughts. In western Europe, we look to the east with some degree of hope. We hoped that Russia would join us as an ally after the Berlin Wall fell, and we hoped there would be peace in the Middle East so it too could join us as an ally, but instead, we got Putin and the war in Syria, a hostile Israel, and a Turkey that seems to be moving away from our values.
