There's like half a dozen forks of it on GitHub, each of them fixing a pet peeve of that particular developer, but only one of them has submitted a pull request to the original repository, and that was in July 2017, and the original developer hasn't merged it.

It feels tempting to merge all the forks. It would be a good little training project for learning more about Common Lisp.

Hmm, JSON Web Token support for Common Lisp isn't exactly stellar. Wikipedia lists an implementation of it, but it's just a GitHub repository last updated 4 years ago, with no support for asymmetric RSA keys: https://github.com/gschjetne/cljwt

Current state of affairs in technical room in my apartment building: 3 fibre Internet connections, 500/500 each, 3 Mikrotik routers and 1 ZyXEL GS1900-24E switch. Tubes have been laid in the ground for CAT-5 cables to two other buildings on the property.

One day, I'm going to have my genome sequenced. It's within the realm of affordability now, and I could learn a hell of a lot about my body and my family history.

@dvn I was told to try that by the people in #lisp on FreeNode. Not currently an Emacs user, but will need to become one in order to have a non-shitty Lisp experience, it seems.

Using a string library can either mean that you're a programmer, or it can mean that you're a very advanced guitar player.

TIL that the Vim-like mode in Emacs is called Evil mode.

Of course they had to call it that.

Holy mother of God, Slime is ugly. Also, the screenshot is ancient. macOS hasn't had scrollbars like that for ages. This is from the official website.

You can really tell that these Lisp guys don't worry too much about appealing to newcomers.

SBCL, the most popular Lisp interpreter, doesn't even use Readline, so you can't use the up-arrow key to bring up previous commands and re-run them.

clisp does it, but people seem to be talking that one down. God forbid you make anything user friendly.

@debbie It also didn't hurt that there were plenty of American movies and TV shows around me, and while you can always get by with subtitles, you get more information if you can understand the speech too. Scandinavians tend to have a good command of English, but I think I've gone further than most, because I'm on top of the English language news media, and I'm communicating with English speakers daily.

@debbie Learning natural languages is the same way. If you're not immersed in the language you're learning, it's difficult to retain it. The English I learned in school was easy to retain and extend because I was a kid trying to learn about computers and I was desperate to understand programming documentation, and at this point, reading, writing and speaking English is second nature to me.

The issue with learning additional programming languages is that you typically don't need them until you suddenly do.

I didn't learn ES6+ syntax because I felt like it. I learned it because I was doing web front-end projects and needed to understand it in order to grasp what was going on in the example code for modern JS frameworks, and then it snowballed from there as my code got increasingly functional.

In 1998, I was indeed busy ripping CDs, toying with WinAmp skins and visualisers, and experimenting with MP3 bitrates, but I was 16 years old and was just moving away from Pascal and into C programming, and Lisp wasn't even on the radar.

It tells you something about the state of affairs for Lisp that the most popular guide to Common Lisp, Practical Common Lisp, uses a CD library, an MP3 browser and an ID3 parser as example projects, which was probably hip in 1998, but is hopelessly out of date now, because 1998 was 20 years ago and we use Spotify and iTunes now, and CDs and MP3 players are dead.

The only problem with Lisp is that Emacs with Slime is the standard Lisp environment, and I'm a Vim fanboy...

I keep bumping into dilemmas when considering career options: "I don't want to be a software developer anymore, because it wears me down mentally. Let's become a CTO or software consultant, except I can't do that, because listening to people talk for a long time wears me down mentally."

I'm trying to imagine some kind of job that allows me to use my skills, but won't wear me down, but can't think of anything.

I think this might be an issue caused by what I suspect are my autistic traits.
