According to the old beliefs of the Sami indigenous people of Norway, all fetuses start out as girls in the womb, and only become boys if the goddess Juksáhkká interferes.

Depicted is a Sami rune drum. It works a bit like a Ouija board. You chant and strike the drum and watch where the piece of bone goes, and make a prophecy based on the symbol it lands on.

It's kind of fascinating that even today, there exists a perception with some ethnic Norwegians that the Sami, the indigenous people of Norway, have special access to the spiritual world. I knew that the Vikings would sometimes consult a noadi (Sami shaman), but I didn't know that such beliefs had stuck around until I encountered a superstitious woman from East Norway who, upon hearing that my mother was Sami, made claims of such abilities in the Samis, and seemed in awe of them.

Why is it that fucking Aqua songs are more listenable to me than what's on the charts these days? Oh right, it's because I'm getting old. Move along.

Remember when Discovery Channel had science and history on it, Animal Planet had animals on it, and Music TeleVision had music on it?

@debbie I've noticed that many companies prefer younger and less experienced developers, and I suspect it may be because the experienced ones have too many opinions already, and can't be shaped in the way they like it.

@debbie I've been doing this since about 1992, so I'm not exactly new to the business.

@debbie I usually have opinions about the best course of action for a company. Also, the APIs aren't to my liking... The gist of it is that things have changed in a way that I don't like. Things I liked about being a developer are disappearing, so perhaps, as I've said in other toots on here, the conclusion is that I no longer want to work with it, if it's going to be that way.

@debbie But the whole developer-facing SaaS movement? That's one step too far for me.

@debbie I liked it much better when servers were colocated, but went along with the VPS wave when that came along, because at least you still had root, and could SSH into the machine.

@debbie It's not Google Cloud or AWS in particular, but rather the move away from servers you can run any software on. I felt a bit constrained trying to work with cloud services in the last job I had, and also, it didn't feel like we owned the data.

Only the expensive AWS options permit you to use, say, an SQL database. It's all custom shit designed to lock you into their systems so you can't migrate.

@debbie Well, I could adapt to Cisco I suppose, but they're kind of everywhere and you sort of *have* to have a Cisco certification if you want to work with networking, which feels a bit like a monopoly to me. Also, they don't seem to give a shit about the quality of the places that give Cisco certifications. I took one back in 2001 and the place was a joke. They fed us answers to the final exam questions... Also, they charged a lot of money for it. Total scam.

@Ricardus @bamfic Well, there's the America where you live in an upper middle class neighbourhood and nobody in your circle has ever faced any serious adversity, and then there's the other America where you're living in the inner city and there's guns, drugs and gangs. Or what about the America where you're all rednecks who like moonshine and target practice? They're almost like different countries, because they don't ever seem to touch.
