Since I installed smart lights and made a device that keeps them in sync with light conditions, I haven't really needed to use a light switch for several months now. The lights do their job and I don't think about them.

I did a WiFi survey of a cellar today. I don't know how such surveys are typically done, but my method was to place a test AP at a location that would likely offer good coverage and then walk around rooms in spots where people will likely use WiFi and take dBm measurements, and if coverage is bad somewhere, move the AP and try again. By the 2nd attempt, I noticed a thick concrete wall, and when I took that into account, I found a good spot for the AP on the 3rd attempt.

It took me a whole work day to configure 2 managed switches and 8 access points. Turns out that unboxing, connecting, booting, configuring and reboxing things and documenting it all takes a lot of time. It's like setting up your home network 10 times over, and this is just the finishing touches to a network that took me a good week to nail down because I haven't built a network on this scale before and had to learn by making mistakes.

@deejoe The ISP refuses to install centrals in the older buildings (and won't explain why), so his electricians have put pipes in the ground for Ethernet cables, because I told him I could just extend the network myself that way.

@deejoe My landlord has hired me to provide better Internet connections in two other buildings on the property. He rents cheap rooms to people from Eastern Europe. The buildings (except mine) are old and there are not many luxuries, so he at least wants the Internet to be good. 2 extra fibre centrals are being installed this month, one per extra building.

Tonight's activity: Provisioning switches and access points.

Whenever the food manufacturers complain about the new sugar tax, they always make sure to mention the 350 NOK VAT limit on imports. If your item costs less than 350 NOK, you pay no VAT on it, so people are buying soda from Sweden in droves, both online and offline. They badly want that limit lowered to zero.

I get angry every time I see it, because that limit also makes it cheap to order things from China; usually things they don't sell here, and thus it doesn't harm Norwegian businesses.
