I don't know why, but particle physics feels fake. Discussing interactions between quarks and muons feels a bit like discussing how many fairies can dance on the head of a pin. The standard model has the feel of astrology or alchemy to it, with its charts and baroque rules. String theory and branes? How much LSD did they take? I mean, I'm sure it's all correct. It's just that I can't feel convinced, because I can't make sense of it, and it all sounds a bit contrived.

Disney's Fantasia had a segment removed from it to placate creationists:
"John Hubley, the segment's art director, explained that it was later curtailed by Disney to avoid controversy from creationists, who promised to make trouble should he connect evolution with humans."
I didn't know that creationists were even around in the late 1930s. I didn't know of their existence until 2005 when the Kansas Board of Education controversy developed in the United States.

With this cat in the house, you absolutely cannot leave food on the table.
My cat is no nervous wreck, but he's definitely a food wreck. There is nothing in this world he wants more than to eat human food.
No matter how much you try to discourage him from begging or stealing your food, he will beg and steal your food. It doesn't matter how fancy his cat food is; his true passion will always be the food of humans, for it is the nectar of the gods.

A bioengineer who had lived in Norway since he was 16 years old had his citizenship revoked after evidence was found that he had lied about his country of origin on his asylum application. He declared himself innocent. The ruling was upheld after the appeal.
The case presents a dilemma. Fraud is bad, but is it right that a lie you told at age 16 should come back and destroy your new life decades later?

My cat isn't very smart. He isn't very smart at all.
He kept trying to go on the table to eat the leftovers. Since he'd attempted it about 6 times within the space of 30 minutes, and nothing else had worked, I bopped him on the head with my fingers.
Having a very thick skull, he was mainly startled by the sound, and looked around in confusion at where the sound had come from.
Me and my roommate almost died laughing. The sound! He didn't even notice my hand. Just the sound!

@sdm This is where the lack of full federation for threads on Mastodon is a problem. View this thread on the web.

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia Are you sure that's not just some sort of conspiracy theory based on wishful thinking? How can we know how popular Bernie would've been if we never had a chance to test it, though? I mean, that doesn't really prove that Bernie would've won...

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia In Europe, we always say that America's foreign policy doesn't really change much from president to president. It just continues to maintain typical American interests, like going to war i the Middle East, having arguments with Russia, etc... It doesn't seem to ever change.

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia At the moment, cutting military budgets is a bit hairy... There was just a giant NATO exercise here in Norway in an effort to give the Russians a bit of a svare, and there's a push for NATO countries to spend more money defense. The geopolitical climate doesn't lend itself to defense budget cuts, I suspect...

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia The Democrats strike me as "American leftists". They're as left wing as you can be in America and still have a fighting chance. If they have moved right over the years, it's because being further left was costing them voters. When I look at something like Obamacare, I see a compromise. He wasn't able to get anything else passed, but probably would've done so if he could've. At least that's how I interpret the Democrats. They're doing what they can within limits.

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia Well, somehow, candidates who do attempt to promote such things in the US never seem to make it... I suspect Americans are tax averse because there is little trust in the government, especially the federal government. It's a vicious circle. The citizens never let the government do good, so they don't trust them to do good, etc.

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia Policy changes over time too. I mean, there's a political party in Norway called the Left Party. At the time, they were considered leftists, but now they are considered centrists. Why? Because the Labour Party came into existence, and they were much further left than the old left, but they kept the name.

@MatejLach @erosdiscordia The US Democrats do something like it too. In a sense, it's more about public image than genuine policy differences in the case of Norway. The two largest parties are both close to the center in terms of actual policy. The right wingers might reduce the taxes a tiny bit while the left wingers increase them a tiny bit.
