The first one I tried. It said MasterCard, Visa, UnionPay and nine other networks on it, but for some reason didn't like my cards.

Ok, noodles place accepted the card and I bought cash for HKD at the forex (at 1–2% worse than bank rate, of course).

Then I tried to buy train tickets, but couldn't figure out how to make the machine take the cash, so ended up buying from a human who just laughed.

"Machine difficult? Haha!"

Tried two different cards, each in two different Japanese ATMs that supposedly supported those two networks. They were declined.

My cards don't have any international restrictions as far as I'm aware, worked well in Europe.

Now I'm afraid that a third ATM might eat my cards.

Hope the restaurant accepts some card for these noodles. (supposedly it does)

I just got kudos from my manager because I'm less conflict-averse than him.

If I'm interpreting this tohether with what others have said to me before in this company it seems that when I'm just asking for clarity or stating things that are obvious, that can put people off-balance who would like to keep everything indirect and obscure.
