In another thread on another network someone also gave an example where a developer took 5 lines with clear intent and turned them into 400 lines with far better performance. That certainly happens, and then it's a trade-off. How readable and maintainable were those 400 lines and how much did they improve the usability and usefulness of the program? -

@Howard Chu @ Symas @Vangelis Kostalas That's fair. Feel free to help me improve the wording.
We write software for play, to learn something, to entertain someone and/or to help someone do something.
We don't write code to produce lines of code.
Another hedging statement I could add is that fewer lines of code is not better if it's due to code golf or any other code removal that makes the rest less maintainable.
Lines of code is a proxy and always flawed, whether you aim for many or few of them.

@Mans R I don't even remember, someone on Fedi said conspiracy in some software context last night I guess, and I just wanted to throw in a link to that file. -

@Vangelis Kostalas In the case of a one-off script maintainability would usually require adding some more scaffolding around things, considering more error conditions, adding proper testing etc. In something that is already something we'd call an application and is already using good engineering practices, keeping complexity and scope at bay, things for which lines of code are a proxy, is how we keep potential maintenance effort down. -

@Vangelis Kostalas @Howard Chu @ Symas I originally wrote this with "user", but a lot of people including me don't like that word and I hate the word "stakeholders". Clients don't have to be paying clients, just someone or some community for whom we're making software.
It is perfectly valid to write software for oneself, just nerd away for the art and/or fun of it, but even for software written for oneself, more often the software is incidental and serves furthering some non-software goal.
Lots of people originally considering themselves non-developers get into software this way β linguists, lawyers, biologists, textile designers, tax accountants, visual designers, musicians, architects, farmers, divers ...

Oh yay, it's Saturday, that's why. Ok, settle down, my heart.

I can't find anything like the text, and unfortunately Haskell projects often have a cabal.txt for packaging reasons. -

Software development is about solving client problems, not about writing code.
Code is our foremost method for solving client problems, but lines of code are a liability, not an asset. The fewer you can get away with while solving the client's problem equally well, the better.

Which Free Software project had an in-joke where there was a text file like "cabal.txt" on their web site and the file just said "there is no Swedish cabal"?
Gnome? Mozilla?

Because it is deeply, insidiously woke, wholesome and anti-imperialist, about capitalists forcing brown people to fight each other, about gentrification and about community and class solidarity. It even advocates in words and demonstrates in action the benefits of rage.
#BlueBeetle is a subversive super hero film. More left-wing than Michael Moore.
All this while being fun, exciting, high stakes and much less on the nose than e.g. Barbie.

What this movie needs is some right-wing uproar about how woke it is. PR department please get on that.

Cool, never heard of this one before. I don't think it made its way to Sweden.

@Sotolf With all this in mind, in my particular case I have been testing consistently N my whole life and the fact that I'm now testing S rhymes with my ambition to mature and become more well-rounded and open to other perspectives than my own, moving this trait toward the center.
Maybe it's self-fulfilling, maybe I'm answering as the person I'd like to be, but I'd find that interesting too, that my ideal would be moving toward my meta-ideal, my "ideal of an ideal", my intellectual idea of what I'd like my intuitive, emotional ideal to be.

MBTI has multiple issues:
1) self-reporting
2) lack of orthogonality between traits
3) lack of rebustness and repeatabilitybut even more:
4) treating bell curves as dichotomies
5) Barnum descriptions of archetypes
6) exaggerated claims of applicability -
