I do not appreciate when it's 2024Q1, something has a timestamp in 2019Q4, and a computer system calls that "5 years ago". -

β² @clacke@libranet.de: Manager: I'm trying to set up my phone so I can receive work emails. Did you get it to work?
Me: Never even crossed my mind to try.
Mgr: Why?
Me: Because then I would receive work emails on my phone. -

"Free software and the shifting landscape of online cooperation"
Benjamin Mako Hill talks about how social commonses created methods and tools that were then learned and coopted by corporations, how some corporations that were incidental allies of Free Software two decades ago no longer are, and what that means for Free Software activism today and in the future.

I'm reading a report on polystyrene recycling in HK (we don't, many places don't) and the three Rs of waste management have now become four Rs:
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Recover, which means that burning trash and recovering energy is at least better than putting all of it in the landfillIt feels pretty desperate to put that fourth R in there.

#ForAllMankindS3 was *intense*. I ended up binging the second half of it last weekend.
Now I'm on #ForAllMankindS4 and every season just turns it up another notch, doesn't it?
I love how the history that isn't coming directly from the althistory premise repeats itself, and I also love that sometimes it doesn't, or it does but at another pace.
You're always on your toes because you don't know what's gonna happen, but if you grew up in the 80s, 90s and 00s you also recognize so much of it, and the show captures the feeling of those eras so well.

Villeneuve said he likes #DunePart2 because Part 1 was more setup and worldbuilding and in Part 2 he can allow more action.
Exactly the reason I liked Part 1 more. π€£
Too much traveling and fighting, not enough war rooms! The first movie deserves all the time it takes, but I actually think Part 2 could have been a bit shorter.
Loved the movie, obviously, especially that Chani gets more space, just comparing two films, both beautiful.

Reading a thread about "smart" appliances and I want to find that old IBM quote about how computers should not make management decisions.
The first couple of search hits are IBM software products for making management decisions.

When you think you're reading a criticism of the center-left from the left, but then you read on and it's actually just far-right talking points and come to think of that first thing you read was one too, you just interpreted it charitably before you saw the pattern. -

I like the name. Turns out it was a little bit too close to the truth, hence the recall. π

I returned three of IKEA's recalled "Γ skstorm" USB chargers. I replaced two of them with a new and superior charger from the shop downstairs and one of them with a not quite as good charger I had lying around.
I will be net plus/minus zero even if I get a second one of the superior charger, but for now I'm fine with not being able to charge a laptop in every room.

In clinics, verbally, I have been named all kinds of things, including "Mr. Villain", but in email people usually get things right as it's plain to see in writing, and they don't have to try to pronouce it.
Today was the first time someone mailed me, in writing, as reply to an email I sent with signature and everything, and believed that my given name is William. π€£

Maybe the most actionable and fair advice is that you cannot pull yourself up without help, so get help.

I imagine that a person with no support network is in a vicious cycle where the lack of a network is part of the obstacles to creating one. -

@Oddtail They exist, but a person has to be lucky to have those.
I think it makes sense, but it's a harsh thing to say and has a strong component of victim-blaming.
It's hyperbole, but I don't think it's entirely untrue, even the harsher interpretation than what "compassionatereminders" is offering.
I read it as "if you will not fend for yourself, who will", and it's not fair in any way, and I'm not sure how actionable it is as advice, but I think it is trivially true that someone who actively goes out and makes friends will have more friends all else equal, and that requires a certain level of confidence, believing in yourself and vouching for yourself.
