β² @hankg@friendica.myportal.social: In the past month I started noticing a hard push of ads for the Opera browser. Timely that @OSNews highlighted this story. God they make the people at Brave sound like down right saintly good Samaritans. As @Thom Holwerda wrote, just use Firefox already. #opera #brave #firefox

Wow! I left a message on voice mail and after I rounded off and said thank you the robovoice said thank you, goodbye. Did it actually detect that I was done, or was that lucky timing? -

@Kermode I am in HK, and my HK time difference to Paris is seven hours.
Why is this relevant? I send important emails to people in Paris and I want to know how late I can send them and still say they had a fair chance to read them this week. π

@Kermode I'm sure anyone would hear the difference between Finnish and Scandinavian, their roots are barely from the same side of the planet. A French accent is closer to a Scandinavian accent than the Finnish accent is. π
Culturally though, we understand Finns far better than we do our neighbors to the west.

@alysonsee (Fca) His vowels and prosody are 100% Swedish, definitely no other Scandinavian dialect, I'm sure of it. I can even say he's from central Sweden. π -

I hadn't listened to this for a long time and wow, I sound much more Swedish than I remembered, haha. I can place myself within a couple of seconds as well.
I don't sound this Swedish in my head, but this was 5 years ago. I owe HPR many shows, maybe I should create the time for myself to record something again for an up-to-date sample after 5 more years of daily professional conversation in a French-English and Cantonese-English environment.

I can spot this guy's accent in literally two seconds, he's obviously Swedish:

Here's how I sound (not the robot lady, not the Irish lady, the guy after the intro jingle):
hackerpublicradio.org/eps/hpr3β¦
How similar do we sound? Can my accent be placed?
I'm not looking for praise or criticism or anything, there's nothing wrong with a detectable accent as long as people understand each other. I am however interested in accents and how they work, and I'm a very familiar specimen to me, while at the same time it's difficult for me to listen to myself objectively.
I do have internalized accent shame and accent pride, but I try to counteract it because I think it shouldn't have a place.

@Dave T-W They should have had her made from the Fifth Doctor's hand instead of the Tenth Doctor! I hope they at least considered that and only went back to the active Doctor because they couldn't make the story work. -

What's the time difference to Paris?
Am I sweating? No. My fingers are shivering.
Is the AC on? Also no.So, it's seven hours.

@sudo beep Yeah, if you look back at the root post it's Ty and That Guy and they used to mainly discuss The Expanse, which they each had a hand in making, behind (Ty) and in front of (That Guy) the camera.
Your viewpoint makes a lot of sense, of course, and there is exactly one scene in the show where Naomi jumps from one ship to the other, and there we get her audial point of view, so we hear decompression, it's dead quiet as she jumps, and then we hear air rush in, and the quiet is so powerful in that particular scene.
In other scenes though, like sure, if you hear one ship then you can say it's from within that ship, but when we can hear multiple ships firing rounds, which I'm sure happens in some scene, we really just have to accept storytelling license. =)

What's the opposite of a micro-aggression? Micro-kindness?
When I see the little things like the last person to leave a lift holding their hand out behind them, so the doors won't close too fast on the total strangers waiting to enter the lift, that kind of stuff warms my heart every day.

Correction to self, as they finished all of The Expanse quite some time ago, movie reviews is now their main track. The lengths vary from 40 min to 80 min, there's no stopwatch. -

@Kermode When I said "I know there are many people out there who would have zero patience for this kind of show" I was literally thinking of you and/or @LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} who could not listen to a whole This Week in Virology because of all the waffling and asides and the sheer length of it all. -

Oh, now I remember, there is one episode of TatG where they mention that tE tries to be realistic when it can, but silence in space?
I believe they'll say rocket engines firing is a storytelling device and an emotional component of a scene and you can't move a ship in silence, it kills the scene. TV craft before realism, sorry.
If someone knows which episode that is, I'd love to hear Franck and Chatham discuss that.

@Kermode No, TatG E21, which I didn't even link to, reviewing tE S2E07. That one is 1 h, so I imagine that's their standard format.
This movie review is a special episode outside the main track.
