> βOne thing that we have learned is that piracy is not a pricing issue. Itβs a service issue,β explained Newell during his time on stage at the Washington Technology Industry Association's (WTIA) Tech NW conference. βThe easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. Itβs by giving those people a service thatβs better than what theyβre receiving from the pirates.β

Watching Historia Civilis talk about how industrialism and capitalism used the clock to undermine sustainable work habits, and then watching @Adam Conover talk about the opioid crisis, that double-feature made for an interesting cocktail in my mind. -

Ryan George's #PitchMeeting for #RebelMoon must be the most scathing yet.
Normally the vibe is "yeah I can always find nits to pick but generally I enjoyed the film" and it shines through. Not here. He clearly hated every minute. π¬π

I understand German from 6.5 years of study and one year living there, but in terms of listening and understanding my levels of German and Norwegian are similar, without studying any Norwegian.
I wouldn't be able to pass as a Norwegian speaker, but in a brief interaction I might be able to pass as a German speaker with an unplaceable somewhat Swiss accent.

The thing with English fluency vs Norwegian fluency is that I understand English because of 9 years of school, 30 years of internet and 40 years of consuming US film and TV.
I understand Norwegian 80% as well as I understand English, simply by knowing Swedish.

As a Swede and as an elder Millennial who grew up with more Norwegian programming on Swedish television and with early pan-Scandinavian TV3 on cable, I understand Norwegian a bit better than younger people. I also made an effort to watch and understand some Norwegian comedy shows in the 00s. But I still understand English more effortlessly.
I don't understand much of spoken Danish at all, but written is ok.
If I would go and live in Norway for a few months I'm sure I'd catch up quickly and understand it well, the differences are mainly phonetic and some core vocabulary. Maybe I could even pick up Danish the same way. This is not something I could do with Dutch or German, those are proper distinct languages.

@LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} @simsa03 Today, Norwegians are better at understanding the others. Again, perhaps because their dialect diversity is greater while Swedes and Danes have moved closer to "Radio Swedish" and "Radio Danish". Also perhaps because Danes and later Swedes held dominion over Norway until the 20th century.
Norwegians I have spoken to understand spoken Swedish better, but understand written Danish better. Danish has undergone large changes in pronounciation over the last 100 years that have distanced their spoken language from the others, whereas writing is more conservative, and one of the written Norwegian languages is based on written Danish.
Norwegians and Danes watch some Swedish TV while Swedes mostly watch no Danish or Norwegian TV, so Swedes are the worst at understanding their fellow Scandinavians.

@simsa03 @LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} I get the impression that older people were better at mutual understanding between the Scandinavian dialects.
Perhaps they lived in a world of more diverse dialects, so they had more diverse input within their own language and perhaps they had more patience for making an effort, both listening better and making an effort to speak understandably.
In the 80s and 90s pan-Scandinavian and pan-Nordic bodies like the Nordic Council would barely use English at all, they would all speak in a neutralized Scandinavian. The Finns although they didn't speak a compatible language as their mother tongue, would have learned Swedish in school.
These days cross-border collaboration is more often in English.

Father of the Wirth family of languages, most famously Pascal, Niklaus Wirth would have been 90 years old in a few weeks. He passed away three days ago.
Apart from programming languages, both his own and collaboration and standardization with others, he also contributed to our body of knowledge in algorithms, methodology, user interfaces and OSes, much of which still hasn't seen its full potential. He will influence the field for decades to come.
Thank you for your work, Wirth. Pascal was the second programming language I learned and it influenced me greatly in my early years. I have yet to check out your later work, but it's been on my list for a long time.

In business Swedish there is the expression to "take height for" something. This means that you aim higher than your original estimate, you add margin, to account for some more or less uncertain factor.
Typical use might be e.g. "ok, this looks reasonable, but did you take height for compatibility issues?"
This became widespread in the 00s and seems have come from business Danish, which in turn got it from seafaring Danish, where if you're rowing toward something you'll want to "take height for" the current and aim higher upstream than your destination to account for your own drift downstream.
This and other etymologies were discussed in the latest episode of "SprΓ₯ket", including questioning several common-knowledge etymologies. E.g. "pain riche" isn't a fake French loanword in Swedish, it's a true loanword that survived longer in the borrowing language, while the French started saying "baguette" instead.
