So a bunch of techbros all had XKCD cartoons memorized by the numbers in their perma-links
"XKCD number 570," one would say
And the rest would chuckle, getting the reference, but not laughing hard, because the jokes were all old and stale
So when I noticed this, I said, "XKCD number a million"
And they all laughed uproariously
"We've never heard *that* one before," they said

@frostotron Yeah, I actually do really appreciate that stuff too
I think I might start adding more explicit signs that I'm joking
There's a world of screwy stuff that can be hidden behind "I'm joking, depending on the reception that this gets"

When I say, "Disney is a rent-seeking parasite and shouldn't be allowed to extend copyright another 20 years in Canada"
If you interpret that as me saying, "small artists should have no protection for their creative works at all"
Then you fell for this trick HARD

The reason "Intellectual Property" is bad is because it is a term that (probably intentionally) conflates so many almost completely unrelated issues
If we're being trained to think that copyright, patents, trademarks, etc. are all the same thing, then you can make an argument that works for a small-time artist's creative works, and then do a switcheroo and suddenly we're talking about drug patents
THAT is what I mean when I say that "Intellectual Property" isn't real or needs to die

Techbro: Ugh, if you can't even Google how to use git, or if there is even a "test" commit of yours in your entire history, I can't even help you, there's no hope for you n00b
The same techbro: Actually, you should summarize for me, in detail, all the relevant details of queer history and explain them to me in a way that I can understand and that doesn't offend my delicate feelings; if you do not spend your time and energy to educate me, Iβ

There is a time for discussions like:
* How to interact with police safely
* How to navigate capitalism and live
* How to talk to doctors without screwing up your lifeAnd there is also a time for discussions like:
* Why we shouldn't have to worry about safety around police (or whether they should exist)
* How capitalism itself could be replaced/improved
* Why we should be able to trust our doctorsAnd derailing one kind of discussion with the other is rarely helpful

So far, the hamfisted attempts at commercialisation of the Fediverse have been ridiculous/mock-able, probably in violation of the AGPL and they just didn't get momentum
But when a slick, user-friendly instance with proprietary code and targeted ads comes along with the backing of Google or whatever, ready to "embrace" the Fediverse (coming soon: "extend" and "extinguish"), we might not have much time to mash the "block" button before it's too late

If you are an instance admin, you NEED to block instances, and do so EARLY when they are being run by people who are acting in bad faith
* Hiveway was very stoppable because they didn't have a critical mass of users for whom it would be seen as "unfair" to block them for their admins' bad behaviour
* Bofa was a lot harder to stop because there was like a million hand-wringing about how many users they had, and how it's "not their fault"
Block bad instances EARLY
