    Part of capitalism is making empathy painful. Every panhandler or crowdfunding link hurts. You can't help everyone, much less save them. It's a system that makes you close yourself off, to try to stop it all from burning right through you.

    But picking cgit instead of GitLab might be a controversial choice. Depending on the size of your projects, GitLab might be the better option. My stuff is small and unpopular. cgit is the right size for me, I think.

    @andybalaam What I did is fiddle a bit with cgit and now I think it works just as well. Compare:

    In the software I hopefull changed all the URLs to my own hosting but of course most people when searching for a project of mine will still find the GitHub page and for now that's fine. I don't mind them using GitHub. (Nor do I mind looking at issues at two places, which might be trickier for larger projects.)

    @andybalaam What I do is I just have multiple remotes. "origin" points to my own git repos at alexschroeder.ch/cgit and "github" points to github. Whenever I feel like it, I can push to GitHub and I just think of it as a "backup" and if people prefer to create issues there instead of my wiki, then that's fine, too.

    @mteege I don’t know anything about it. What do you use it for? And can it be summarized in a paragraph or two for newbies? After all, I don’t want to link all the GPG things but simply get people started with a working installation. The target audience is not victims of state actors or Debian contributors.
