"Looking ahead, I'd love to see a foundation bring together the Linux desktop community and have them hammer out out a common desktop for everyone."

What about the GNOME or KDE foundations? or do those not count? What about the elementary folks doing an excellent job at designing their OS and ecosystem?

LINUX ISN'T THE FUCKING PLATFORM... Stop treating desktops environments as pluggable modules that you should be able to hotswap without that having an effect in functionality of your machine.

@endomain @phessler That's not what their "what next" section says, though: "If you run sitex.org, then your connected users could also automatically end up in teamx on Keybase".

That does not imply anything manual to me. "could also automatically end up in" is very clearly automatic.

Whether it is something doable or not is secondary. That they think adding people to teams automatically is a good idea, is, in itself, telling.

@endomain @phessler Adding people to "teams" automatically, without consent is my main issue with the idea. Just because I happen to be on Mastodon Instance X, that doesn't mean I want to be on Team X too. It's way too easy to abuse, especially if things are encrypted (and thus far harder to filter, etc).

Opt-out is *always* wrong. We should've learnt that lesson many times before. E-mail and spammers come to mind. Or ad pamphlets before that.

The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.

Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.

Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.

One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies) and on the board of Facebook.

I do not recommend using Brave.

@juliank That requires me to write a script to move stuff away. Being a terrible, lazy person, I will likely end up not spending 15 minutes to do that, and instead, will dive into the directory once or twice every decade or so.

Or maybe I'll get my act together and do just what you suggested, because it makes total sense. (Thanks!)

@zge I'm... lazy. You should see my ~/tmp/.

On second thought, no... you don't want to see *that*. It's much smaller, but dates back to 2008, making its name oh so ironically accurate.

Ok, ~/Downloads is the big guy. 41G there. Oldest file is from January 2012.

I guess I need to put on some diving gear and clean this out.

The checked out source is ~350k, there are ~2200 objects, and ~430 commits.

I guess the layout images I have there take up quite a bit of space, with their history and all.

    Yikes. ~/src/personal is 5Gb.

Ok, half of that is my brother's website with a ton of big pictures. Still, there's another 2.5Gb of stuff there.

    Most fun part:

    148M /home/algernon/src/personal/Model01-sketch/

    Even funnier:

    125M personal/Model01-sketch/.git/

Still 113M after git gc --aggressive --prune.

@Wolf480pl It would, but why keep the repo if I'm not going to do anything with it for the foreseeable future?

I'll be keeping some of ~/src/ext, I have notmuch, emacs, searx, plover, QMK and a few other things which I will keep.

But stuff I cloned in 2016, and never touched since? Nah.

I'm cleaning out my ~/src/ext directory. I have ~/src/personal for my own stuff, ~/src/$employer for work stuff, anything else goes into ~/src/ext. There's lots of stuff there. Like, 30Gb work of stuff.

There are some things in here which I don't remember ever looking at after cloning their repos.

Ran the tester by my wife, she prefers Kailh Reds, and linear switches in general. Her favourite though is Cherry MX Silent Reds (in my Atreus). Nevertheless, she understands why I prefer a tactile bump, a pronounced one at that, so we ended up settling on Kailh Box Royals.
