@dthompson I use Tectonic, which you might be able to obtain if Guix can build Rust stuff. Although Rust may take a while too...

I apologise, I am being unfair to GNU awk - POSIX awk also has those things. Yup, 'do one thing well'. Totally.

"What do we really need in our line-based text processing tool?" "TRIG FUNCTIONS" "Yeah, totally a worthwhile feature - do one thing well!"

TIL that GNU awk has arctan and other trig functions. I _know_ that it's a low-hanging fruit, but seriously, what UNIX philosophy?

web devs: semantic versioning is the only acceptable method for serious, professional developers, such as ourselves.

Knuth: TeX versions asymptotically approach pi because I think it is fun.

software development is an emotional roller coaster.

the joy when you find a new useful tool or library.

the despair when you find out you need npm to get it.

@kzimmermann C++14 and C are very different languages in their design, and I don't think they're comparable. Rust _is_ good to learn.

ugh, since marijuana was legalized in MA last year towns have been moving to ban the sale of it, and it's working because only the older crowd tends to participate in town government. now my town has a proposed by-law to ban both recreational *and* medicinal sale. there's a public hearing on monday that I'm going to try to make it to. does anyone have a good reference for countering common arguments against marijuana sale?

    To do:
    - clean up my public git repos
    - blast out some resumes and cover letters
    - more polish on the website

Many people have said "no interviewer looks at your website," and that's mostly true, but at my last interview there was one person who did! And turned that into an interview question! 😬💦

So I kinda want it to be, at least, not old bitrotting garbage

@dthompson Brother are also pretty good - mine doesn't even need a driver, and just interprets PostScript directly.

As expected, Canon wrote back to me saying they have no plans to free their driver source code.

Lesson: Just buy an HP printer, folks!

@cstanhope and those shared libs were built with a 6 year old version of gcc. why won't they give us the source. :(
