@I it's really interesting to me when a plant flourishes totally fine in the wild but resists all efforts at domestication!

It spreads and branches into a messy cloud of incredibly soft, furry (silky!) leaves, topped by fairly large light-purple flowers. It's pollinated by long-tongued bees and in the winter, sparrows eat the seeds. Silky aster is a really good choice for a rock garden or dry-prairie garden!

Its potato-y tubers (technically rhizomes) are extremely high in protein, and were dried or boiled as a staple in the diets of many Native tribes (plus that of the settlers). The flowers are gorgeous and showy, but the vines can grow to 10 feet and will take over a garden. It was never exactly domesticated in the US, but it escaped to Japan about 100 years ago and they have a good time cultivating it.

I extremely did not grow up like this, my mom and I got in a really bad car crash in 2002, sued the people who hit us and the company he was contracting for, and won, eventually (2012), so this is where my folks live, there is also a spinning bookcase leading to an office
