I think that funding free software needs to come within companies, and within our community. Software devs have a lot of power, and worshiping at the feet of SaaS and venture funding doesn't help.
The real problem, I think, is that we tie "owning" to getting support and using software. I see lots of people using Jira or Confluence because then they get support for their wiki. They use Active Directory instead of OpenLDAP to get support. We need to build our companies to support open software, avoid open software, and buy support contracts, rather than hosting.
If the monetary centre of software is hosting (SaaS/The Cloud), then companies will buy that. Any any idiot with a server can offer hosting of a product.
If we say that support is the cost centre, then we can get real value. But this requires real work. The rest of the world needs to be pushed against.
Basically, we need to resist the way software is moving, and call out these kind of bad actors.
