Thinking about... the incredible strength of habit. Breaking a habit is one of the hardest things that people still manage to pull off.

Willpower is finite; you expend it on thoughts and behaviors, and replenish it with rest.

When a behavior becomes a habit, it takes much less willpower to do it. Habitual behavior has inertia, requiring more willpower to stop doing it.

There are skills - learnable actions and models - which are useful in changing habits. I think the name for these skills is "discipline."

it is a gap which becomes all the wider for having to be pointed out to the latter group of people

Imma make this clear: I'm not building software for developers.

I'm working to building tools for people.

You shouldn't have to know to maintain and secure a server to have your own independent identity online. You shouldn't need to know what libsodium or similar library to be secure online.

That's my objective.

My other worry is that people don't seem to get that by assuming the primary role of an integrator higher and higher up the stack, they're ceding their hardware and their freedom to folks making those tools. If you don't understand how the pieces below you fit together (at least roughly, if not at a line-by-line level) then you're pretty much doomed to always be at someone else's mercy, because you've convinced yourself you have to be subservient to them otherwise you won't have a computing platform.

Sometimes I stop myself from giving half-formed thoughts as replies. Better to let them brew awhile first, and develop them into actual ideas in their own right.

Thoughts are like tea. The trick is to let them sit for the right amount of time before sharing.
