you should get into programming, but never tell anyone but friends that you enjoy it, and don't ever mention
    - frameworks
    - languages
    - indentation
    - vim or emacs
    - whether the open squiggle bracket goes on a new line or not
    - frameworks, seriously don't ever do this, especially not electron
    - programming paradigms
    - anything containing the phrase "considered harmful"
    - you know what just don't talk about programming

"The End of Cyberspace" by Alexis Madrigal https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/05/the-end-of-cyberspace/588340/

The techlash seems to represent a turning point in what people think the internet "should" be. Which makes sense:

1990s: lots of small players, privileged and mostly tech-savvy userbase, rapid innovation: anarchism is great!

2010s: handful of bigcorps with more power than nation-states, large vulnerable population actively exploited by bad actors, feature stagnation: ehhh, maybe we should give this government thing a shot

Internet theorists and companies once declared themselves free of nations and governance, but that’s all over now.

Some interesting questions that the "John Perry Barlow to Tristan Harris" (as I'll call it) transition raises:

    - What does it mean for organizations like Mozilla and the EFF? Is the internet still really a "frontier"?
    - What does it mean for science fiction? Does the "Snow Crash" vision of cyberpunk hyper-individuality still seem plausible?
    - Is the internet becoming nationalized? Colonized? Partitioned? What's the right metaphor here?

still thinking about open source contributions that aren’t code and really focusing on design.

in my time at the LF — which does serve a need, but only because: capitalism — i often felt like folks were almost TOO “deep in” to see little things that i felt were obvious.

everyone shouting “well if we don’t establish a shared governance committee to ensure future interoperability of the underlying frameworks.…!” and i’m like “ok wild idea here but what if the apps weren’t hard to use and ugly”

This belief, that you only want 'smart people', that leaders of society and captains of industry must get away from the vast sea of ordinary people so they don't get Ordinary People Mind Cooties...

I can't stress this enough. This is an evil belief and the more it finds a home in STEM and tech companies, the more unspeakable suffering will result from it.

This belief is the Atlas Shrugged myth, the idea that all the problems of Earth are caused by other people, the untermenschen, that if you just put all the self-selected supermen together you get paradise.

It's what's driving Silicon Valley's Cloud and Big Data and Disruption fixation. It's what's driving transhumanism and "rationalist" cults and Bitcoin and the alt-right. It's what's making SV ignore the inflated rents they're cursing cities with and the suffering that causes.

    It's fascism.

    Say hello to Telephant!

I've written a little Mastodon client for the Desktop - called Telephant - and am currently looking for beta testers!

Want to help out and don't mind compiling the app yourself? (Don't worry it's fairly straight forward and I've added detailed instructions to the README!)

    Join me here:
    https://github.com/muesli/telephant

Looking forward to hearing your feedback!
