As Easter is coming up, I'd like to take a moment to say that bunnies are cute but also huge dickheads. They're rarely docile and cuddly and will absolutely destroy everything you love.

They live 10+ years, cost as much as a dog, and need a lot of time and attention. 75% of rabbits in the UK are neglected and many bought at Easter don't even make it to a year old.

Know what you're getting into, or stick with chocolate. http://bunny.nipple.solutions

With the debate over #Microsoft #Windows vs #GNU #Linux raging on, I look at why Windows is unquestionably the top choice in the foreseeable in terms of ease, #accessibility, and #ethics. Noble as #FOSS advocacy is, can it really compete, especially among #women, going forward?

Shout out to my fellow #LeftTwitter crew! Great to be here. Do be sure to check out the #anticapitalism #anarchism and #SocialJustice tags to find other like minded people. Or if you're a #FOSS enthusiast there's a great #Linux community here too.

    Here's a great little intro to the #history of #anarchist #organising on the #fediverse!

@belghast @kaniini exactly. It's "haha your password is bad you fool, you imbecile" and so rarely "here's why your password is insecure, the reason we suggest you jump through these hoops, and what it could mean for you if something is compromised"

I use my in-laws as an example of how these things are done. The former is incredibly insulting and at times infantalising, but too the latter is almost always phrased in a jargony way they wouldn't understand at all.

@kaniini I'm probably more lax than I should be but definitely beyond the average user. Agree entirely on pro failures but not nearly enough is done for the individual level to make it understandable and accessible to people, making them the massive weak link. People laugh about 'end user errors' a lot but quietly don't actually address it and instead keep everything ambiguous.

This happens even if you're serious and just talking about it. I started mentioning getting back into computers and all of a sudden, before I even started joking about it, I was getting whole threads telling me what Linux is.
At one point I got told I should try Ubuntu because debian with xfce could be difficult for me. I'd already mentioned using it for over a decade.

This is true of women in STEM the world over, the presumption they couldn't possibly know and so using it as a chance to either flex or white knight.

"Haha Google is FOSS because I can view source in chrome" is absurd. "Microsoft Windows is FOSS because i didn't have to pay to upgrade." No one is going to call a guy on those.

The punchline to the entire joke is the guys telling me to shut up because i'm obviously clueless.

The reason tech bro trolling works, even if you are astoundingly egregious about it, is internalized misogynistic presumption of incompetence.

If a guy makes a joke about Linux, open source, whatever, that's really painfully obvious they're pretending to not know what they're on about, they're not likely to get many responses confronting them. Even if they seriously don't they often don't. Someone hyperfeminine? There's no fucking way they could know what they're talking about.

I really #Respect #Women, that's why when they're wrong about something I do the #Kind thing and let them know. #Women are often wrong about #Linux #GNU and #FOSS which is why as a #Man I always do my bit, for #Feminism

People keep telling me to use Adnauseum, an ad blocker that clicks on ads to give them the profit they desire while actually blocking them all.

I'm not helping to give companies profit for a corrupt business practice that is compromising the security of users. It's telling them the business model works and to continue in an extremely 'I'm alright, Jack. Just carry on fucking everyone else over instead' way and I despise it.

    Build a better model.

Adblocking isn't unethical. Covering your website in trackers, spying on users, and compromising their security to make a buck is.
