So I found my old fortunes file, and it contained a Terry Pratchett quote that just seems exceedingly appropriate today: "Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time."
They are actively looking for feedback from individuals, private groups, and whoever is interested in using this setup, so if you have the time and inclination, check out their test month and let them know what you think!
Modular now provides hosted Matrix, including DNS and branded Riot (the Matrix app), and a web-based management interface. Apparently many of the Matrix core developers work for them, so that seems like a good and sustainable move on their part.
In case you want to play with it, they offer a free month for testing. Their pricing is obviously targeting companies, which also seems like a good move regarding sustainability. https://www.modular.im/services/matrix-hosting#pricing
@mwlucas Yeah, as a noob who just uses PGP for mails and file encryption (on servers where there's basically nothing else available), this rang horribly true.
@Matemann Oh, I wasn't aware that magic-wormhole is commercial, proprietary with a single point of failure. Could you point me to sources on that, please? Because to me it looked self-hostable, open source, and decentralized.
Soweit keine Beschwerden.
@epilys Haha, I'm sure the information is littered everywhere! But I didn't know about it and a reasonable amount of my friends were surprised, too, and since blogging is good writing practice, I thought it wouldn't hurt.
Since it was surprising to me that 127.257 and 2130706433 are pingable addresses, I wrote up my findings and a short explanations for people unfamiliar with how IPv4 addresses look under the hood: https://rixx.de/blog/fun-legacy-ip-addresses/
@GyrosGeier I read those, thanks. Also, I usually don't follow up on an author by reading another book by them. That rarely works for them (otherwise I'd have listed other Delaney books here.)
