@PhotonQyv Kids can usually tell you what they want to be when they grow up. That would count as "knowing where you're going with your life", even if you never actually get there. If you're studying for a degree in a field you want to work in, that would also count. If you're expecting a child, buying a house or moving somewhere, that could also count.

If all you have planned for the next 5 years is to continue what you're doing and have nothing special to look forward to, however...

I'm hesitant to order parts for my electronics projects. They are going to be a lot of work, and there is no promise of success or reward at the end. I'm 99% sure that no one's going to care.

The most boring part of designing a PCB is to create footprints for weird parts.

It's a shame that there isn't a standard format for footprints. Most manufacturers have detailed drawings in their datasheets and footprints they made during development, but they are never published.

@jack @byllgrim But here's the problem with advertising revenue: It will hardly amount to anything unless you have a huge user base, and preferably one full of people who actually click ads, which is basically not the crowd that Mastodon attracts. Your average Mastodon user has an ad blocker installed.

@jack @byllgrim It also costs money to publish apps to the Apple App Store, since the developer needs to pay for a developer program membership, so if you're making an iOS app, you have to cover that cost somehow. Businesses like Facebook and Twitter cover that cost with advertising revenue.

@jack @byllgrim You generally can't get people to satisfy the needs of complete strangers without bribing them. That's why most volunteer-driven FLOSS efforts are so lacking.

@jack @byllgrim Linux is only a good enterprise OS because several large companies are contributing time and money to the project. Most of the code being added to the Linux kernel is written by corporations.

@jack @byllgrim If the client doesn't make money and the network doesn't make money, how do you fund the development of such a client? Free labour usually only gets you to "has enough features to satisfy the developer's personal needs", because nobody wants to spend their free time working on features they're not interested in.

@clacke @abouix @badrihippo @njoseph The thing is, just about anyone can devise and propose a mechanism, but the right group of influential people must express interest in it. In other words, politics must happen.

@clacke @abouix @badrihippo @njoseph I'd trust the mail server of the recipient to give me the right key. When clients connect to receive email, they should send the public key to IMAP servers with the proper extension. Hell, one simple way of pulling it off would be to have a standard folder where a message with the public key is stored. Then the IMAP server wouldn't even need special support for it. You'd just need to get that key to the key server.

@clacke @HerraBRE @delta @badrihippo @njoseph No *standardised* mechanism was ever devised. There are a zillion proposed and/or proprietary ways of doing it. Who's behind Autocrypt? Without a standards track and support in major clients like Outlook, Apple Mail or Gmail, it's not going to take off.

I'm tempted to order two of these modules. One to keep in the window to measure the absolute ambient light colour, and one to stick near one of my smart lights to measure their color. Now, ideally, if I do this, I should be able to use the input from those two sensors to match my indoor lights to the outdoor ambient light, and also, store a whole bunch of mappings between the two and train a neural network with it.
