@coldacid Yeah, I know you were joking, but the joke doesn't really work for Norway. I feel it fits somewhere like the UK better.

@coldacid Our original line of royals, the one that descended from the Norwegian viking chieftains and kings, basically doesn't exist, but we've been busy "reconstructing" a Norwegian royal line ever since. Norwegian kings have usually married Norwegians, and have thus become more Norwegian than Danish with each successive generation.

Unlike Sweden, there is no real nobility. Closest thing you get is shipping magnates. Sailing is a popular hobby with Norwegian royals.

@coldacid In Norway's case, the Black Death mostly killed our nobility and our scholarly class, and we were so weakened by the whole affair that Denmark had to run the country for the next 400 years.

Our current line of royals is actually rather recent. When we became independent again, we asked Prince Carl of Denmark if he wanted to be our king. He came here, held a referendum to check if Norwegians actually wanted a monarch, and then became King HΓ₯kon of Norway in 1905.

@coldacid The thing about Europe is that we've got these pieces of history everywhere, but we don't really care about them very much. We're mostly concerned with having better schools, hospitals and infrastructure. The focus is on modernisation. Europe doesn't want to be stuck in the past. Preservation of historical sites is pretty low on the priority list, despite being relatively inexpensive compared to those things.

@coldacid For some reason, the upkeep of national treasures and monuments is *not* a fixed post on the national budget, and money must be explicitly allocated for it. We don't even have a building to display the possessions of the Crown, such as the crown jewels. The Queen has been lobbying for that for years without success. I wasn't even aware that this was a problem. Why would you not immediately allocate money for something like that?

@coldacid Reminds me of another historical building here in Norway: Nationaltheatret. It's considered the home of Ibsen's plays. In the international world of acting, Ibsen's "A Doll House" is well known.

The building is slowly falling apart. I thought they were fixing it because they had covered up the fascade and was shocked to learn that they're just trying to prevent bits of it from falling down on people.

The Notre Dame fire is genuine sad news. There is nothing political about it and no one wanted it to happen as far as we know. We're losing a piece of history. Who doesn't have some kind of relationship to the Notre Dame? Even if you're clueless about history, you have a relationship to it if you've seen the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's one of those places that helps define what Europe is to a lot of people.

All semiconductors contain a substance called "blue smoke" which is vital to their operation. Do not allow this substance to escape from your semiconductors, or they will cease to function.

@mrjunge I'm studying for the theory test for the driver's license. To pass the test, the entire book is relevant. To drive a car, the entire book is relevant. There are no parts that I need "now" or "later" because I have to know it all to drive a car without a teacher. It's the sort of thing where you just have to commit stuff to memory.

This whole "read a book cover to cover to learn it" business has never made any sense to me. I can't learn that way. That's what they do in school and it always felt like a pointless exercise to me, because I would hardly remember a thing afterwards. Are you meant to read it over and over until you can remember it all? That sounds like a very unpleasant undertaking to me, like a form of torture. I'm the kind of person who only watches a movie once.

The main thing I'm getting from this app for learning to drive is that I'm not really absorbing the material. I'll read through a chapter and take the test and there are questions about things that I don't remember reading at all. When I go back to look for them, they are indeed there. Now repeat this story for every chapter. I'm not getting better at it and I don't think I'm learning anything from going back to hunt for answers to specific questions.

Should we call it a "dead stream" if it's from a funeral?

@coldacid This is where the fundamental weakness of software development creates a problem. The seed of this idea was to rely more on digital logic and firmware to perform tasks, since that tends to be less prone to failure than software, but that would be difficult to pull off. Unlike machine code, Internet protocols and services aren't designed to be implemented by circuits.
