lol what an oopsie, i said people had trouble making connections "for whatever reason" when what i really meant was that modern capitalism has atomized, isolated, and exhausted us so efficiently that most of us don't remember what living in community looks like or never had a chance to learn. gosh, silly me!
For anyone wondering about my account header, the original painting was done by Tokyo Genso, https://tokyogenso.deviantart.com/

- that [the workers] will rise up against [the rich] because of poor treatment, toxic training, viruses, etc
- that [the workers], left to their own devices, would establish a utopia beyond scarcity but which would be totally inaccessible to, or only used to oppose, [the rich]

@wakest Some people condoned nazis. Some others bikeshedded when we needed to only write two words: "No Nazis". When asked to offer a mea culpa and asked to quit being horrible for once some men still take it personally, act offended and irritated by other people using their voice to say things they don't like, mostly just and fair complaints, and objective appraisal of the disastrous collective performance. There are some ongoing polls that will hopefully get the coop out of this situation.
Pro #empathy tip: if someone is sharing how they feel, maybe avoid telling them they’re doing it wrong
@Matt_Noyes Everything else was debatable. But this is the bare minimum.

8. Don't appease Nazis.

@hattiecat I'm sorry, I have no immediate solution for that, I'm trying to figure out what to do next. Although you're probably missing out on a lot of things if you keep staying at your current instance.
Australia's planned digital tyranny threatens each programmer with being ordered to commit sabotage. Even programmers outside Australia. Officials will be able to order this arbitrarily, and informing a court would be forbidden.
If this law is adopted, everyone involved in software development will need to keep away from Australia. Even the shortest visit would invite being compelled to betray the whole world.

The Declaration of War against Cryptography (aka "The 2nd War against Cryptography") has been issued by the "Five Eyes":
Some choice extracts as an image for posterity attached to this toot and the close:
"Should governments continue to encounter impediments to lawful access to information necessary to aid the protection of the citizens of our countries, we may pursue technological, enforcement, legislative or other measures to achieve lawful access solutions."

Even in cases where ethical concerns aren't a top priority (say, you're just running an auto parts company and you don't really care that your upstream code is ethical) it would still be in your best interest to be able to trust your code, in case you're not building all your software from scratch, which is the most common case in business.
So it's not solely an ethical problem for individuals, there are many other concerns too, also in business.
Even in cases where the code is audited and it doesn't present any obvious defects, the FOSS ethos runs in the direction opposite to giving back to the unethical party (in the form of patches or any other type of contribution)
Say for example, it's difficult to ethically justify staying around Java or Mysql sending patches to Oracle these days, unless you have a massive dependency on those projects and you have no workable substitutes for them.
