@Elizafox @desvox I don't think anyone actually knows how to use git.

A lot of people claim they do. Even I have claimed that at times. But, it's not actually true. Different people knows different specific usecases, but no one actually knows what is actually going on.

@clacke@libranet.de Like awk - designed to do basically one thing and do it well. I also like languages based around a simple concept, like Smalltalk or Lisp.

โ™ฒ @itsahashtaglife@twitter.com: A tale of two fires that nails where weโ€™re at right now. We can raise a billion dollars to rebuild a tourist attraction but we canโ€™t take care of human beings who need help.

PRIORITIES people. Maybe itโ€™s time to re-evaluate ours.

The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.

Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.

Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.

One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies) and on the board of Facebook.

I do not recommend using Brave.

@wilkie My brother was once in a DOS word processor, and drew the backbone conclusion that hmm, if ctrl-delete removes a word, and alt-delete removes a line, then I suppose ctrl-alt-delete removes a paragraph, and the tenth of a second after his finger hit the delete key his brain caught up and screamed at him noooo ... and then the machine rebooted.

It was problems like this which originally motivated me to start running a server in 2010. I had accounts in many proprietary silos and the Great Recession was hitting and I thought that some of those gratis systems are either going to close or go subscription only. Indeed many of them did a few years later.

@mono ไปค = social order, ๅ’Œ = social harmony and Japanese national pride. Appeal to "traditional" values. ๅ’Œ was the second character of the Showa era, where Japan's imperialistic militarism came to the fore.
Of course, it's just two characters so I could be barking up the wrong tree ;-)

@matejlach No coincidence that my last 3 servers and workstation are all AMD - not that I can't say they're much better than Intel, unfortunately. Want to try OpenPOWER and hoping RISC-V will make some headway beyond the niche embedded market.

"Security researchers have discovered a previously unknown feature in the #Intel chipsets, which could allow an attacker to intercept data from the computer memory. "

    https://gadgets.ndtv.com/laptops/news/intel-visa-sa-00086-exploit-researchers-computer-data-access-2014854

At this point, I'm not sure why bother with software security measures at all. They impede performance and are easily subverted by hardware on which they run, since CPUs appear to be made for the #NSA to exploit.

It's time to focus the community energy on free/open hardware in a very serious way.

@LibertyPaulM FOSS fundamentalist here. I don't want Mozilla to block this or that. I can do that myself. What I do want them to do is to stop tracking Firefox users with telemetry by default and without informed consent. Most Firefox users are entirely unaware that their behavior data is being sent back to the mothership.

I don't use Chrome and don't advise it. There are variants of Firefox which are better and don't include the spying by default.

Security and privacy isn't a dichotomy. You can have both.
