@balrogboogie And on July 15, 2019, it became realized across the Fediverse that we all pretty much enjoy the Mad Max series, even though we never talk about it. @witchfynder_finder@grainloom
Buddy I work with just got out of 84 days served because it was that or pay some fines caused by an illegal traffic stop; paying the fines would've put his wife on the street.
If anyone in #ChapelHill knows of some work needs done, he's a good handyman, does basic lawn stuff, indoor paints well and even does some sheetrock stuff.
Our mouths were made for praising that sweet by-and-by but it's hard speaking so our voices need a rise above our toil and trouble towards our justice and summer nights
q: emsenn uh how come you don't bring up that you're like a professional anti-oppressor?
a: Because I think my opinions should stand on their own, because if they can't without my credentials, they won't if anyone repeats them, since well, those people don't have my credentials.
If I need to be white or professional for you to listen to me about the sins of whiteness or professionalism, you're almost by definition not going to be able to hear the message.
"Let us never forget the Berlin comedy clubs and cabarets, which did so much to stop the rise of Hitler and prevent World War Two." - paraphrase of Peter Cook
"The audiences like to think that satire is doing something. But, in fact, it is mostly to leave themselves satisfied. Satisfied rather than angry, which is what they should be." - quote from Tom Lehrer
There's a tenant in the building I manage (not own) that has a brother in his 40s who has real bad dementia and just denied benefits, so the tenant will be moving out and him and his brother back in with their ~65yo mom. Tenant already had to quit job at the hospital to have time for helping his family, and is back to working as a line cook.
Any donations to me through the end of the month will go to him as I get them to help him make this transition.

"For unlike someone devoted to the life of contemplation, a total worker takes herself to be primordially an agent standing before the world, which is construed as an endless set of tasks extending into the indeterminate future."
A bunch of you (mostly those with white collar jobs) should read this and consider how close you are to the sort of ideology this article discusses. I think it'll feel uncomfortable, but may help motivate you toward new opinions.
This is to say, I feel like the Fediverse proves the saying true: "When you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression."
Just because white opinions are no longer given special priority here does not suddenly mean they're marginalized, and it CERTAINLY doesn't mean they're correct just because they aren't artificially popular.
If you honestly can't take your opinions being criticized... stop sharing them publicly online.
Instead of posting about it scattered a dozen places I wrote about it once in response to an email from a friend and have now uploaded it here: my opinion on the Kev and FOSStodon thing.
I think this might be more important than any other point in the thread the more I think on it - more important than complicity in advertising, or in wasting energy, is that blocking ads removes a piece's context which limits how you can interpret the piece.
I think the compromise is still the same: adblockers that replace the ads with obtrusive but non-marketing visual noise, so readers cannot ignore that advertising is a factor, though what ads are obfuscated.
Subtoot, why are you "building a better Internet" before looking at how marginalized populations in authoritarian oppressive regions have been using the Internet for the past decade?
If you wanted to understand the real threats that online communications face, you'd look to any of the millions who've challenged those threats, rather than wanting unthreatened people to gather around to hypothesize as to what those threats might be.
I talk about using Org-mode a lot and the UI I normally configure is fairly "ugly" because that's what i think i prefer but i've been trying to see if that's habit or actual preference.
If anyone is curious what my screen looks like when I'm writing, here's a screenshot.
I'm looking at the pane in the top-right to add new buildings/streets/landmarks elsewhere in the same document (as headings) in the top-left pane.
The pane in the center-left is that document's index, which relies on the macros in the center-right pane, the project's main inheritable, more or less.
Bottom-left is an older version of the document in-progress, bottom-right is personal recordkeeping.
@brandon Ahh. No scientists before the Internet also said the climate was going to collapse roughly at this time, in fact Exxon/Mobile's scientists in the early 70s were within 3ppm of how much carbon dioxide would be in the atmosphere this year.
I appreciate your caution but it's all significantly worse than you've been led to believe, if we don't change how the entire planet lives rapidly it is unlikely either of us will face the problems of old age.
