@bjoreman All right, it turns out this is an iOS bug. 😞 I found a reproducible test case and filed it on the WebKit bug tracker: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=190982#c2

It seems the workaround is to just set the accept attribute to */* and allow any type of file to be uploaded. Not a great solution, but it works...

@bjoreman Hmmmm okay, so I need to test to see

    1. If it's something Dropbox is doing special as opposed to iCloud
    2. If it's something special Libsyn is doing (e.g. the proper "accept" attribute on the <input type=file>)

Thanks for the tips! Gotta keep digging... 🤔

@bjoreman Hm, I need to check Libsyn to see what magic they're doing. Have you tried the Voice Memos app? It stores files in a (somewhat unusual) m4a format.

iOS users: is it true that iOS only allows images and video for file uploads on the mobile web? Have you ever seen a website that let you upload audio files, e.g. from the Voice Memos app?

Audio uploads do not currently seem to work in iOS Safari, in either Mastodon or Pinafore. https://github.com/nolanlawson/pinafore/issues/1461#issuecomment-529217849

Mastodon recently updated the allowed audio types: tootsuite/mastodon#11342 Also we should probably switch from an image icon to a paperclip icon to make it clear you can upload audio.

@isagalaev I dunno, I also feel that even if the red light were dependable, I might not notice it. And there have been instances of people getting blackmailed or scammed based on webcam snooping. I rarely use the webcam, so I figure better safe than sorry.

I would be interested to know if it's truly security theater at this point, though. Do attendees at DEFCON use webcam stickers? If so, are they mostly doing it to signal group affiliation?

I don't know how to explain to my relatives that yes, this device which is a billion times more powerful than the one we used to send a man to the moon cannot be trusted to show a little red light when the webcam is on.

Like, at my work we even have vending machines where you can get webcam covers with the company branding. I see a lot of people using them, especially those who work in security

putting a sticker on my laptop camera: something that is totally normal for a security-conscious or privacy-conscious techie to do, but when I explain it to my non-techie relatives they look at me like I'm nuts

App Updates for HTML5 Apps - News - Apple Developer
In order to provide users with the secure and curated experience that they expect on the App Store, we have always specified that apps must be self-contained bundles. This means that the core features and functionality of the app must be contained within the binary of the software, rather than made possible by referring users outside of the approved app, including through the use of HTML5. Apps that provide core features and functionality dynamically with web technology like HTML5 are best delivered to everyone in Safari, rather than through the curated App Store. To prevent fraud and abuse, the exceptions to this rule have always been very narrow. In June, we updated guideline 4.7 sections 4, 5, & 6, to further narrow these exceptions and clarify an existing restriction. Apps containing or running code that is not embedded in the binary cannot provide access to real money gaming, lotteries, or charitable donations, among other changes. All new apps must follow this guideline and we urge you to update your existing apps as soon as possible. If your existing app requires more time to implement the guidelines, we’ve provided an additional six months, until March 3, 2020, to bring it into compliance.View the App Store Review Guidelines

@IceWolf @puresick Sure, a PWA does not need to rely on a server. For instance, a Solitaire app or a note-taking app.

Discord has a cool UI and emoji, but I have no idea why so many open-source communities are gravitating towards it. Color me Discord-skeptical.

@djoerd I know about PWA Builder, my old team at Microsoft built it. :) I've chosen not to upload Pinafore to app stores, because I don't want the responsibility/overhead of that process. Thanks for the tip, though!
