This baby packs a whopping 512MB of RAM, a dual-core processor, and a 2.4" screen.

The OS is based on the old Firefox B2G project (rest in peace), and all the apps are web-based. After some tweaks for the small screen and D-pad input, Pinafore runs surprisingly well.

Don't let anyone tell you that JavaScript apps can't be fast and lightweight!

@trevdor Standard is pretty unopinionated, but yeah it does have some things like "always use const over let when possible." I've been reluctant to try prettier because it's just one more linter effectively...

Usually I can't say enough bad things about Twitter, but this actually seems like a really good idea to me. It's similar to blog posts: on my own blog, I can moderate comments. Same idea here.

@codesections Seems reasonable, yeah. I think the virtual DOM is overrated these days.

Also this may just be a WebStorm thing. Maybe other IDEs are better about displaying critical errors versus minor style errors.

ESLint is cool, but some people spend way too much time coming up with rules about newlines after variable declarations, what kind of code comments to use, and other stuff that doesn't matter.

I like StandardJS because there is just one set of rules and no config file. I just don't care about code style *that* much.

Why I dislike overly-strict lint rules:

    Critical syntax error: red underline
Forgot a space in a code comment: also a red underline

Also: paying Apple $100 per year for the privilege of being listed in the App Store. Really?

At Microsoft I really liked the plan of just indexing PWAs with Bing and including them in the Windows Store. Not sure what happened with that.

Believe me, I've been tempted. And if I want to support something like KaiOS, I might have to. But I just really, really, really don't like dealing with app stores.

Why I don't list #Pinafore in any app stores:

    1. I don't want to have to re-submit the app and endure the Apple review process for every update.
    2. I don't want to have to understand the legalize in Google/Apple's ToS and worry they might take down my app for some unpredictable reason.
    3. I like to respect the user's choice of browser, including extensions and blockers (even if they often cause me headaches).
    4. It's a PWA. Click "add to home screen" and you're done. No need for an app store.

The good news: not much has changed. The bad news: it's still a pain to list web apps in the iOS App Store.

@hhardy01 @cj All of the prerequisites you must meet to be able to modify the code:

    * having the time and energy to do so
    * having the financial security to put effort into coding, instead of taking care of yourself and your family
    * having the requisite minimum skillset to even do so
    * having access to the hardware to develop - increasingly, people just have phones now

If I could restart the FLOSS philosophy from first principles, and re-derive everything, I would start by separating the existing concept of "user", which currently means both "one afforded the means of software development" and "one without the means of software development", and rethink the rights that fall out.

For instance, the existing pillar of "freedom to modify" is no longer equitable.

I have no answers now, but identifying the problem is a good step, I think.

@nick True yeah, the same problem exists on the web. Lots of bad patterns that need to be replaced with good ones for performance, security, etc. Stillโ€ฆ my app is a score keeping app. :P
