    > How did "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" become the typical sentence that contains all letters of the alphabet and not "sphinx of black quarts, judge my vow" which is objectively a million times cooler?

    I'm personally partial to "The five boxing wizards jump quickly."

    Or maybe "How vexingly quickly daft zebras jump!"

    • TEST ACCOUNT of codesections

    I've been building Flóðgått, a replacement streaming API server for Mastodon. The goal is to cut RAM usage and make hosting an instance that much cheaper.

    So far, we've cut RAM for the streaming server of an empty instance by ~94.2%

    The next task is to make sure that lower RAM usage can scale without other issues (e.g., CPU).

    To do that, I need a test server with enough connections to see how Flóðgått performs under load.

    That's where y'all come in: can you please follow @codesections ?

    Ok, just went through a bit of a right of passage I'd somehow doged until now: my WM hard crashed durring an #arch update, leaving me with an unbootable kernel.

    A few hours (and a few boots to a live USB) later, and I'm back in and have restored the damage with no data lost. But it's (another!) wake up call that I need to be better about backing things up (and maybe find a WM that doesn't crash
)

    And yes, #guix folks, I know this wouldn't have been an issue with your distro :D

    Hey @lubuntu, I read about your plans to port #openbox to #wayland using @sir's QtLayerShell—very cool! https://lubuntu.me/lubuntu-development-newsletter-9/

    Is there anywhere I could learn more about the status of that work?

    (Or does anyone else know?)

    Have any of y'all used #puppyLinux or any other distro that runs entierly from RAM? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM

    How much speed increase do you see from running from RAM? What sorts of operations are faster?

    (The reason I ask is that I'm planning a long-term shift away from using exclusively programs on my local machine towards a model based on remotely connecting to a more powerful workstation. I'm thinking of it as #personalBigIron)

    > In my experience, [#PuppyLinux is] a less desirable experience and does well on old computers. That's the reason I have used it, am endeared to it but cannot recommend it.

    What's less desirable about it?

    > If your computer can run something like @Wimpy's Ubuntu Mate, which is very fast, that's what I would do.

    I didn't realize you could run #UbuntuMate from RAM. I might look into that as well, thanks!

    > If you’re just looking for something to run VNC/RDP/Whatever to another box, I recommend TinyCoreLinux. Provides a minimal GUI and can run in as little as 10MB.

    That *is* what I'm looking for. Why do you recommend #TinyCoreLinux over #PuppyLinx? I know it's smaller, but the difference of a few MB will *probably* not be the deciding factor for this setup.

    > Probably should be obvious from the word "settlement", but I just read that if you apply for the #Equifax settlement money, or free credit monitoring, you forfeit the ability to sue Equifax for like 10 years. I'm going to hold on to that right for now... https://twocents.lifehacker.com/why-yo

    #notLegalAdvice

    Note: you're only giving up your right to sue for this past breach or related conduct (*maybe* future breaches?) not random things you might want to sue for

    Tech Support: A Limerick

    You have a few problems computing,
    And call them for help troubleshooting.
    "I'm sorry" they say,
    As you start to pray,
    "But have you attempted rebooting?"

    Does anyone know the original designer of the Ubuntu Orange/Purple colors? I want to buy that person a beer.
    Such a gorgeous idea that sadly seem to be have been left behind in Canonical communications as the company moved forward.

    Orange = End User
    Purple = Developer

    And sometimes Purple was "technical" and Orange "creative" or differences in community's etc.
    Plus the purple, being darker used as background for the terminal.

    A strong argument against the current trend of criticizing billionaire philanthropy: https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/07/29/against-against-billionaire-philanthropy/

    It gave me a lot to think about.

    A sample:

    > The idea that we should divert money from freeing the incarcerated, saving animals, and reuniting families - to instead expanding incarceration, torturing animals, and separating families - seems monstrous to me, even (especially?) when cloaked in communitarian language.

    Adding either a colorized grid or horizontal lines causes the brain to see a grayscale image as a colored one. This is known as the Munker illusion.

    Thanks, that's a really good point about the HDMI out—that would have been an unpleasant surprise!

    I think I might go with the T480 you linked earlier—having the second RAM slot would also be nice since I could cannibalize a stick of RAM from my current malfunctioning laptop once I get my desktop built.

    Thanks again for your help!
