Hi mastodon community at large, I’ve been hearing that some folks are worried that SESTA suddenly makes it legally fraught to run a mastodon instance as an American.

Has anyone done a comprehensive analysis of this? What’s real and what’s not?

@ietyler I interviewed for them and they were super braggy about how much social data they gather and how they needed me to help them organize it. I asked why they needed, time immediately changed, “no reason, just in case, etc” I nope out of there so fast and never signed up for it.

When I see people use it I am baffled.

Software engineers look both ways when crossing a one way street!

First the queers and furries build a space where they can be themselves.

Then the infosec folks find that it fits well with their values.

Then the communists flock to the first real alternative to capitalist monopoly on shortform burst communication.

Then the artists come to find new walls to paint and nobody to tell them no.

The intellectuals, the chroniclers, the priests and the prophets, singly and in droves.

Slowly, it builds. It's neat to build an oral history from inception. #mastodon
