web devs: semantic versioning is the only acceptable method for serious, professional developers, such as ourselves.

Knuth: TeX versions asymptotically approach pi because I think it is fun.

releasing some old code that I've had hanging around for years.

introducing guile-syntax-highlight: a syntax highlighter for guile scheme

    https://dthompson.us/projects/guile-syntax-highlight.html

that project page uses guile-syntax-highlight to highlight the example code, btw.

software development is an emotional roller coaster.

the joy when you find a new useful tool or library.

the despair when you find out you need npm to get it.

ugh, since marijuana was legalized in MA last year towns have been moving to ban the sale of it, and it's working because only the older crowd tends to participate in town government. now my town has a proposed by-law to ban both recreational *and* medicinal sale. there's a public hearing on monday that I'm going to try to make it to. does anyone have a good reference for countering common arguments against marijuana sale?

As expected, Canon wrote back to me saying they have no plans to free their driver source code.

Lesson: Just buy an HP printer, folks!

pouring rain all day. discovered a roof leak that has been dripping water into the kiddo's room all day. got the trusty 5 gallon bucket under it until I can get a roofer to look at it.

it is so common in the Ruby world to put configuration data in YAML files but then preprocess them with ERB in case there needs to be special logic. WHY NOT JUST USE A RUBY FILE!?

@cwebber just read it now. I think it's a good start but the scope seems limited to what I feel is fast becoming an antiquated model where servers are updated in-place. that feature is crucial for "on metal" servers but "immutable deployment" in virtualized environments needs to have a seat at the table. how could guix orchestration help me deploy to an autoscaling group at aws, or to kubernetes (which I haven't used)? need a good abstraction that doesn't prescribe any 1 model for deployment.

@pho4cexa I alter the weights so that some fraction of traffic is going to the new stack. then I check monitoring tools to make sure the new servers are actually working. once I'm comfortable with how they are working, I set the weight on the "old" record to 0 to turn off traffic to the old stack. then when I'm *really* comfortable with how things are going I delete the old stack and aws destroys all the resources for me.

that's about as short of a summary as I can do. questions? :)

@pho4cexa each service of ours has a stack associated with it. to replace the stack with a new one, I created a separate stack so both the old and new are online. traffic gets routed to both by using route53 (their dns service) weighted records. multiple dns records with the same alias point to different load balancers. each record has a "weight" that determines how much traffic is distributed to each.

@pho4cexa we use a ruby program called cfer to generate cloudformation templates that fully describe various parts of our infrastructure. we submit the configuration to aws and it automates the provisioning of all resources in what they call a "stack".

I wish I had the time and energy to reverse engineer this... but instead I'll just buy a new printer. it's a shame because I really like the printer otherwise.
