When younger, I'd think that the real change came from action, destroying or creating the things that need to exist or be destroyed.

Today I understand that the real revolutionary thing to do is to not be ashamed to share good feelings, to be patient with others, to be willing to teach, organize and most importantly learn.

Don't change the world, you can't. You can't change people either.
You can only change yourself. You can set an example.

    That is the real revolution.

The concept of the "majority" is particularly troubling. By always accepting the will of the majority, democracy allows for majorities to have an absolute tyranny over everyone else.

The past was what it was, and out of it we got the internet we have. That is, mostly a compromised corporate surveillance machine. The main question is always what to do with the future.

At some point, there's functionally no difference between enabling exploitative incentives, harmful behavior, and societal degradation vicariously through the products and services we create and actually going out and committing those acts ourselves

Software engineers in particular are masters of deflecting responsibility for the things we create

That's not something to be proud of

We cry shame on the feudal baron who forbade the peasant to turn a clod of earth unless he surrendered to his lord a fourth of his crop. We called those the barbarous times. But if the forms have changed, the relations have remained the same, and the worker is forced, under the name of free contract, to accept feudal obligations. For, turn where he will, he can find no better conditions. Everything has become private property, and he must accept, or die of hunger.

@mayel "From each their own ability. To each their own need."

This is the essence of ethics. Donation based free open software. Planning around the needs of each person as it arises. Making sure no one goes without, or has to do things they are unable to do to live and thrive in the community.

I think it did play its role for a lot of people though! I personally started out as a programmer by "inserting some declarations into a webpage and have it *do* something"...

    @phiofx
Something called Personal Home Pages did that, when it was originally released. The idea was that anyone could insert some declarations into a webpage and have it *do* something without much of a learning curve

Then it became an acronym, a business tool, a programming language, part of a stack, a backronym, a shit show, object oriented, optimized... Now it's PHP 7

@mayel don't give people tools, give them tools to make tools and let them run and do their own thing in freedom

We have a serious problem with digital being a super elitist affair that prevents the vast majority of people from participating in this new type of economy

Just for kicks, which piece of software, of any period, domain or origin does actually enable a *regular* person to create a new service that is not already "preprogrammed"?

@mayel My motto is "go slow and fix things".

'Fix' partly in the sense of cleaning up the mess made by the move fast crowd, but also fix as in maintenance - for things that work well, taking pride in keeping them running for a long time.

There's a good article about the problems caused by the fetishisation of innovation (in the 'move fast' sense): https://aeon.co/essays/innovation-is-overvalued-maintenance-often-matters-more

But I like your repurposing of it in the phrase 'social innovation'. Making things better for people where it's bad.

@mayel @tethre @uranther I really like this as a mantra for giving one's self permission to not be super productive, too.

In programming terms, it's okay to not have a prototype done in a weekend (built on gigabytes of libraries and spinning up 12 VMs and a browser), especially if you've got to hold down a full time job to survive.

Less Erlich Bachman, more Tarn Adams.
