the other are... maybe you're right.

You've heard of Big Data, now get ready for
Big Ass.
It's my sincerely held view that having opinions on anything is bad and invites trouble. I know this because every time someone has an opinion, someone disagrees with it, and this is bad because disagreement is bad. It's my view we should all just get along and not disagree.

The problem with asking Google to remove fake news is that nothing stops them from removing real news that doesn't serve their interests. It could serve to embolden them. And it won't stop fake news, either, because it's a systemic problem. Fake news exists because there's demand, and if you don't believe me, go to infowars dot com.

In synopsis:
To make the foo@bar.org mechanism work you have to use webfinger.
To verify messages came from them, you have to use webfinger.
And I've been told "please don't" talk about webfinger in AP.
Here's my "web finger" response:

Mastodon, for various reasons, displays statuses from instances that have suspended us if they are relayed from another instance, among other things, so stuff can appear in the FTL and give users an impression that something is wrong when they can't follow or don't get replies when it's really something the other end has done.
MST3K user feedback requested on a policy change!
(non-MST3K users can chime in too, but, only if something constructive is being said, not just "that sucks")
We're considering silencing instances which have suspended us in the future. Although we don't make a habit of getting suspended, these things happen for... many reasons.
The reason for this change is not to be petty, but to avoid giving users the impression they can interact with these instances when they see their statuses on the FTL
make me stop muttering "you can't get ye flask" every time I work with flask
if you think about it the pioneer plaque is an intergalactic booty call
Yeah I code
Can someone help
O I'm trapped in a hellscape
D hobby It's absolutely
E shit why do I do this to myself
your brain has the consistency of really soft tofu, thought you'd like to know this.
Trying to decide on a good ratelimiting algorithm for mastodon API requests
Basically mastodon gives you 300 requests for a 300 second time slot. I could just sleep for a second (sleep is free here, it's async) but that seems incredibly wasteful and not suitable if you do a lot of API requests in a burst.
I could also throttle like Mastodon does. Give you a bucket of "tokens", refilled every 300 seconds. But if you go over, you have to sleep until the timeslot resets... hrm.
A lot of the musicians most people think of "revolutionary" or "world-changing" are mostly people who got popular from doing the shit other smaller groups were doing and stole their recognition, or weren't actually that revolutionary at all, they just took their sound from previous inspiration.
“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.”
PR is an acronym for "pull request" and "public relations" and honestly this isn't a coincidence.
when I die someone better say "fuck that Eliza bitch" once on the fediverse
I won't forgive you if you don't
tired: coding in assembly language for fun
wired: hex editing binaries to remind yourself you're still alive because the pain of it is the only thing you can feel
Best advice I've ever been given when programming:
make it work, then make it work fast.
