Slackware is one of the most UNIX-like GNU/Linux distros. It contains also non-free software - on freeslack.net are descriptions how the non-free parts can be removed.
Slackware's founder ( Patrick Volkerding ) is the person who decides at least what Slackware is - what software gets shipped and so on - so he is on the very top and Slackware is his baby if you want so :-) Many people don't like this concept - what I can fully understand - but for me Slackware is quite a nice distro. It ships great documentaion, it ships a bunch of software ( a full installation moves around 9GB ), it is systemd-free and it is very popular for rejecting pam. Slackware is quite special - I like it :-)

I like Gentoo very much. I began getting deeper into the linux topic around 2013 and started with archlinux. I liked it, but with time I stumbled upon the systemd topic and then I decided to try out something different and switched to slackware. Slackware is also a very nice distro in my oppinion. With time I tried out FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NixOS and Gentoo and and Gentoo are the GNU/Linux distros I like the most.
My Gentoo installations are all without systemd and currently I run my Gentoo on my desktop without pam, so with Gentoo you have a lot freedome - of course the compiling time can be a very relevant aspect - depending on your system setup and hardware of course :-)
