@shebang @Sabex If it's an investment and not operated as a business, it's about 20% effective tax rate, at least in my tax bracket and province. Capital gains are 50% taxed (not taxed at 50%, but 50% of them are considered as taxable income), with the ability to report losses against those gains for up to 3 years.
It still sucks to have to, but then again it probably stings even more for rich people who don't have creative accountants that find ways to put even more of it out of reach. -

@augustus >I wouldn't care about black doctor who if it wasn't part of some sick fucked up social engineering agenda.
That's really the crux of it; it only bothers me because it matters so very much for these things to happen to powerful people who openly have James Bond villain-tier plans for the world. -

@vriska VGA is still common in the enterprise world, where the cost of solving chicken-or-egg problems at that scale deprioritize them. They're still somewhat the standard for presentation projectors and for servers; the market has been trying to transition away from it, but it can only move at the speed of the slowest companies to upgrade their server rack monitors or conference rooms. -

@coolboymew This is why I decided against getting a projector for my new apartment, I didn't have space for the feeding through in the living room -

@coolboymew It's not that it's likely to taste bad, it's just how fucking lazy it is. Instead of designing a proper fish pizza, let's just throw on top whatever else we have surplus of at the food transformation plant! -

@coolboymew @helene @icedquinn I have a friend who got one just for Beat Saber. If they could see themselves having the space for it, I'm sure plenty of people would consider getting it for that; it has that Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Wii Sports kind of appeal (well, maybe not for the elderly like Wii Sports, but for everyone else).
For me personally, the thing I like to do most in VR is target shooting. There's a bunch of games on SteamVR that are basically just playing around with guns. With the stereoscopic view, and having 2 hands tracked, it's finally at a point where shooting a gun in a game is more than just pointing a crosshair and clicking. There's even fancy rifle stocks that add recoil. -

@icedquinn @coolboymew @helene The Meta Quest 2 is fairly affordable considering it's essentially its own game console; 300$USD.
I'd have probably picked one up when I was shopping for a VR headset, had it not at that time REQUIRED a Facebook account to be functional at all. I think that's changed now, so maybe it's a good choice again. -

@coolboymew @helene Yeah, sadly I feel PC or fixed console VR has a ceiling on its appeal. A portable console, or a standalone headset like the Meta Quests are likely to be the breakout devices to finally make it mainstream, because it's a non-starter for the vast majority of people to dedicate the kind of space a really good VR setup needs. They will need a device that has the ability to be used outside (or anywhere they can find the space that isn't next to their PC or console). And the compromises are not that big anyway; VR doesn't need big realistic graphics to be immersive. -

@coolboymew @helene Yeah, it is. The tradeoffs make it comparable to the Index IMO (better display, worse controllers), but it's cheaper. Only accessory I felt I needed to buy for it was a rifle stock. -

@helene @coolboymew For PSVR, the headset itself was competitive when it came out, but it's was held back by the tracking technology they were using (late Wii era motion control tech), and increasingly as that generation went on by the PS4 itself.
Now I'm on a HP Reverb G2, a Windows Mixed Reality headset, and the headset itself is really nice; quite high resolution for the price, very clear image, and no base stations required, so it's a good one if you can't dedicate a large space to VR. The controllers are "first gen" though, no fancy knuckle controller like on the Index, and the controller tracking has occasional glitches due to the limits of inside-out tracking (very tolerable, nothing like the PSVR when it decided to act up, but it will remind you this is still early days for VR). It's specialty is simulators, where you won't be using the motion controllers anyway... if your PC is up to the task, because games like Flight Sim have extremely high requirements on a normal monitor, VR increases the requirements, and the high resolution of the HP Reverb G2 raises these even higher. My 3070 can't cope with cities in it. -
