My job is moving pretty much everything to the cloud, but seeing the datacenter still makes me nostalgic. Looking at it, I don't see racks and blinking lights, I see the beating heart for an information-centric company, that pumps data in and out to the cells.

@lain Major is the best part and the hardest worker of the Biden admin, apparently he's been mauling secret service left and right like a champ.
-
@lain :sadcat:
-
@orekix @lain @triodug tfw still owning things :sadcat:
-
@lain @triodug He's more of an old school sci-fi villain. Like something out of Flash Gordon
-
@lain @triodug He thought he had the market on real life James Bond nemesis cornered, only for Musk to steal his thunder(ball).

@Moon I usually put on cooking shows on the cooking networks or a movie when I'm at my mother's place. Because otherwise she'd put the news and I'd either be stuck trying to ignore it while clenching my fists or jaw at what I'm hearing or being rude and putting headphones on.
-
@coolboymew @trishuna @Moon "Authenticated" does leave a lot of room to interpretation. The good faith interpretations I think would be either that blue checks would be more like what they were initially meant to be, which is to say a "confirmed identity" to be given broadly to whoever wants it and doesn't mind confirming their identity and less of a "good boy medal". Or it could be a reference to anti-sybil detection; that users are actually individual users and not bot farms.
-
@trishuna @Moon @coolboymew He's been publicly talking about open-sourcing the algorithms for transparency's sake. Considering how obviously Twitter has been manipulating what's trending, what shows up on feeds, etc, open sourcing them would at least improve the neutrality of the platform.

@Moon @evelyn My fedi admin personally reads all my DMs
-
@Moon @evelyn Is it? Where can the manpower for someone to personally watch every second of every day of every person in a public space be found?
-
@Moon @evelyn Basically, I think it's the unwanted attention, not the recording that's bothering them. There's plausible deniability that a security camera doesn't translate to "you have someone's attention".
-
@Moon @evelyn >Or maybe they think that the guy behind the security camera cares less than the guy with the camcorder.
I agree people should be less okay with non-stop surveillance, but I think that's a very reasonable assumption for them to have.
Someone points a handheld video camera at you right now, it speaks to how much they want to have a recording of YOU specifically, while the security camera as far as everyone knows, no one will really pay attention to unless retroactively if something significant happened at that place and time. I'm sure people would be just as upset if they were to find out that the guy behind the security camera was paying special attention to them and making private copies of everywhere they showed up.

@sathariel Are you sure?

@Mitsu @helene :sadcat:
Do you think you can train the bunny to play Yoshi's Island?
-
@helene Can we have a cat, @Mitsu ?
-
@shmibs They can be quite nice, but as I get older I find myself spending more time on reading and listening to information and history about about them than playing them.
-
@icedquinn @lain And when they actually compare it with something, it's usually a bad comparison. Proof of work energy usage does not have the same function as the electricity involved in VISA purchases. It's equivalent is the energy usage of all the security measures taken by the system to protect against the equivalent risks on the crypto side; double spending, counterfeiting, etc... And that also includes the energy cost of the explicit threat of force behind those measures: police, military, judiciary, etc.

@aven @7 Seeing in-video sponsors make me smile because it undermines the network effect that would otherwise protect Youtube's market from alternatives. Advertisers go where the users are, users go where the videos are, video producers go where the ad money is. If the relationship between advertisers and video producers bypasses the platform, then there is little reason not to distribute the content on every possible platform.
