    @dcmc some of those "yooper" (yes?) families with roots to the era still retain a very unusual accent that I (mistakenly?) chalked up to the finnish influence.  it was really neat.  I remember being amazed by the old mines and refineries that dotted the region as well as some crisp boreal habitat.

    although the story I was told there was that the finns working the mines imported them to the region -- is this true?  I always found this strange given their origin.

    @nerthos no way, vultures have easily some of the lowest germ and parasite loads of any bird of prey.  (although, taxonomically, some take exception to the notion that they are birds of prey, but fuck those people.)  vultures have a taste for some dreadful shit, but they're totally cut out for it.
