yeah, I guess I got carried away in the context of the conversation, thinking HTML vs JavaScript. perhaps declarativeness is not the line, even more so now that CSS is Turing-complete itself.
still, much of the complexity you refer to comes from external API calls, which can indeed bring undesirable (from a user control perspective) properties to an otherwise declarative environment.
arguably, at that point, it's no longer purely declarative; that imported computing is one that couldn't be done internally, but it can be just as much of a source of control over users as any component in that imported language.
it's clear there are underlying assumptions that we don't share, and I sense you're not too keen on exploring them further, so I'm leaving it at that if you wish

I agree P2P is better. individual instances would be a way to address that, but we seem to be going the opposite direction, in which instances' royalties hold power over their subjects

triviality meaning something that could be expressed in a declarative language.
again, there's hard science behind classes of languages, and on what's computable or not.
it is possible to express the narrower classes of computing in the more general languages, but the opposite doesn't hold, and that's the key distinction IMHO
typical ghostscript documents are not much unlike hello world programs
typical web-delivered javascript programs these days are monsters that attempt to do our computing in environments out of our control within our own computers
    they're entirely different
we're kind of lucky that ghostscript hasn't faced the same horrible development

though GhostScript is Turing complete, nearly every document expressed in it is trivial enough as to not be relevant computing, or anyone specific's computing. exceptions to the general rule can be dealt with, and generally are. even fonts embedded in such documents have given rise to this sort of issue. maybe you haven't come across complaints about that, but complaints have been made.

HTML tags are declarative. JavaScript is Turing-complete. there's a fundamental difference in the expressive power. something's being Turing-complete means that anything whatsoever that is computable with a theoretical Turing machine is also doable with that something, even if in convoluted ways. not being Turing-complete means there are constraints in what can be computed. being purely declarative is a far more stringent constraint that renders it basically useless for anything that deserves to be called computing, or programming for that matter. there's an entire and fascinating field of computer science called formal languages and automata that studies these differences (and a lot more :-)
