I've run into this quote, that seems apropos:
"You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it’s based on a deep need to believe" -- Carl Sagan -

we realize this is one of those ideas that it's hard to believe in, but we assure you, the internet had stuff on it before the money got here

instead of trying to fix the problem of LLM-assisted content farms by charging money to do a search
how about remove the incentive for it and build search tools that simply exclude any site that's selling something or running ads of any kind
like that's the actually useful results anyway, to end users, right?

I should get involved with lxde
I gave it a try long ago, I wanted it to work because of 'lx', but it wouldn't support the arrangement of virtual desktop that I wanted. maybe I should give it another try ;-) -

question from the clueless here: I'd learned that salmon return to their place of birth to breed. wouldn't that make wild salmon return to wild places and farmed salmon return to farms? how would they interbreed if so? I suppose, given that they are breeding, that I learned something wrong, but what is it? -

it's long been the case that fraud that's not caught benefits the perpetrator. some think there's merit in successfully defrauding others. -

I've been thinking about that, and I came up with this theory that this is a fundamental difference between faith and science
when the argument presented by the person is more like a scientific theory, and available data contradicts it, the reaction is often of interest, to adjust the theory to best integrate the data
but when the argument is more like religious dogma, that the person identifies deeply with, when faced with a contradiction that threatens that identity, it triggers an "identity protection" reaction that amounts to negation, rejection, and ultimately retreat from the conversation
please bring counterpoints so that we can refine or correct the theory :-)In conversation from gnusocial.net permalink -
