noodling on a key layout for my mitosis http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/e1a6a7a480fd4984c0bed38ee35f6c4f

I think I'm onto something good with moving all the braces and brackets to a symmetrically-arranged row

and then placing [!] and [?] on [,] and [.] respectively

@dthompson wow that looks similar to, but sooo much nicer than the first one I built

also that same miter saw was one of my first power tool purchases once I became a homeowner

I will never understand the gatekeeping of forks, all the fuss about whether they should be "allowed" or not.

    It's goddamned free software.

If they're not allowed, its not goddamned free software.

One of the four freedoms is the ability to modify the code as you see fit to service your purposes in any way you desire.  If you remove that, it does not have all four freedoms, and it is not free software.

maybe it's because i'm not hip or with it but I thought we all agreed that

policing preferences and othering people is shitty and

doing shitty things ironically doesn't make it less shitty

so why the hell is everyone so delighted by the pineapple-on-pizza-or-not meme?

let people enjoy a thing jfc

i was hanging on for the whole conversation until this made-up scifi word salad threw me. 🙃

so i'm gonna figure out what these words mean

There is a regulator in schematics(U2). What's that name? and you need a filter capacitor for Vın and Vout. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/67859/how-to-select-capacitor-values

@bob I recall thinking, a decade ago when I didn't hate Reddit, that the algorithm building their non-chronological list was surely implementing a random-rewards mechanism for addiction. ("Variable ratio schedule reinforcement.")

You can't simply check later and catch up, you have to constantly refresh because there's no telling when a gem will turn up, or disappear.

Now that I think about it, the anonymous imageboard sites where many of those types got started behave that way too.

.@datagrok I get the aesthetics angle, but from an ergonomic perspective the ortholinear grid layouts seem like they were designed by an alien who read in a book that humans have ten fingers and assumed that said fingers are of equal length and protrude in parallel straight out from the human's center of mass.

I mean admittedly I'm biased, but it seems to me if you're going to go to all the trouble of ditching the conventional design, why not use something designed around the shape of your body?

Speaking of aesthetic, I wish the beautiful 3D renders done for Oblotzky's Oblivion keycap design were open source so I could make my own. https://oblotzky.github.io/sa-oblivion/

@Conornash yep, that's a Plank. For me the aesthetic is ruined by a visceral feeling of losing my home position among all those flat, uniform keys 😜

Open hardware and firmware is huge though. It's the #1 reason I built an ErgoDox in 2013 and a Mitosis last month.

@Conornash oh I'd put the Kinesis in a totally different class than the keyboards I'm complaining about, which are flat (no bowl) and encourage pronation and ulnar deviation of the wrists to position the fingers on home row and align with the columns. (pictured)

But thank you for the reply; it's good to observe that there's more to an ergonomic setup than just key arrangement. I haven't experienced RSI symptoms yet so I'm glad to hear others' perspectives.

I'm looking for arguments in favor of the ergonomics of flat ortholinear (grid-like) key arrangements, which seem to be by far the most popular among keyboard enthusiasts these days.

So far the comments I've seen seem to confirm my suspicions that even though they might have advantages in cost, simplicity, size, and aesthetics, they're just as bad if not worse for ergonomics than standard row-staggered keyboards (assuming you attempt to touch-type "correctly" on them).

@algernon Thanks! That sounds a lot like what I'm doing. I'm glad to have advice from a veteran!

I'm hoping my brain will keep this column-staggered split arrangement associated with the new layout so I don't trip myself up switching back to qwerty/row-stagger every so often.

While I'm building that split personality I think it might be time to try again to switch from vim to emacs as well 😁

    @algernon thanks for the recommendation!

Actually, I just built a Mitosis (QMK firmware) and I have blanks on it now, but I haven't trained myself up enough yet to use it for my main keyboard. If the keys were labeled, then I could cheat, and hunt-n-peck my way through, I tell myself.

I guess I will persevere and keep training!

🤔 Should I abandon the Workman-variant key layout I've been training on, in favor of the much more popular Colemak?

There's pros and cons for both but the keycap sets rarely support layouts other than Qwerty, Dvorak, and Colemak.

On the other hand, that issue is moot if I get a sculpted/dish board and use flat (not sculpted) caps.

On the other other hand, I guess I shouldn't be looking at the keys anyway.

@deshipu @amsomniac tangent: i believe part of the reason software creates a "winner takes all" market is due to elimination of people's basic ownership rights. if people had the ability to study, modify, and build upon their software the way they can with any physical good, there would be more collaboration, market options, small shops serving niche interests.

free software and copyleft helps address this imbalance, and universal income would let more people write free software.
