@bob It still seems quite bad. Andy Burnham apparently has tackling homelesness high on the agenda but it doesn't look to have made much difference yet, empirically at least. I saw a lot of people on the streets today in just one afternoon walking around.

The sad thing is there seems to be a lot of soulless development going on, bars, chains, high-rises of luxury flats, so it seems money is being invested in the city, but not in a good way in my opinion.

About halfway through, and I'm enjoying Consider Phlebas so far.Β  It's my book I'm reading at night at the moment, and it's ticking the boxes for that (nicely written and not too taxing).Β  It's not a really strong plot, but kind of a series of gripping set pieces and cinematic imagery.Β  Slightly overly masculine in viewpoint I think.

One part of it was a bit bloody grim.

"We need to cultivate new ways of producing and consuming technology that are better for our society and our planet. Where are the projects that are already doing this? Most importantly, how do we do this in a way that -- unlike much of the "foodie movement" -- is about a radical restructuring of relations between producer and consumer? Because in the end, we don't just want capitalism that is "bursting with flavor"; we want fresh, juicy, and local.......liberation." https://colet.space/slow-tech-movement/

@kavbojka Looks great. Love what you folks are doing at CoLET - and I have found your reading list a great source of material :)

I think you're right about a growing movement - I hope we can join it up internationally.

Bits and Baums conference looks like it was really good. Coming together of leftist techies and environmentalists to find common ground, demands and strategies.

"Civil society and a critical scientific community have the skills and the strength to help shape digitization in the long term. We cannot merely leave digitization to business and politics."

Good breadth of areas of tech covered in their demands too. Looks promising. Would like to go if there is one next year.

A circuit made from lemons, copper coins and galvanised (zinc-coated) nails. Lighting up a low-current LED.

The copper and zinc are electrodes, amd the lemon juice is an electrolyte. The acid in the lemon juice reacts chemically with the zinc and liberates electrons. These flow to the copper. Three of these electrochemical batteries in series is enough to light a low-current LED.

I mean this stuff is like woahhh. Absolutely fascinating!

Latest review: Jackson Rising, about Cooperation Jackson and the efforts to build a solidarity economy in the Deep South of the US. (Sorry #readinggroup, I put this one on the backburner for a while!)

Lots of repetition in the assorted essays, but interesting snapshots of a movement with a radical and ambitious vision. I especially appreciated the history of African-American co-op efforts. A bit more:

Measured the potential difference of all the components in a circuit and it adds up to the voltage of the battery. Dropped the resistance in the potentiometer, and the PD in the resistor in the circuit jumped up. Everything still adds up to voltage of battery. I assume it means the resistor is then doing more work?

    Super cool!

A 9V battery, some test leads and croc clips, a resistor and an LED. I am way more excited about this LED lighting up than perhaps I would have expected to be. This is loads of fun.

I’m even enjoying measuring the resistance of resistors with the multimeter and cross-checking against the reading from the coloured bands.
