Digital technologyโ€™s effect on the environment.

    https://neweconomics.org/2018/11/disrupting-the-climate

It uses a lot of raw materials; produces a lot of CO2 in manufacture; and the โ€˜cloudโ€™ uses a vast amount of energy in use.

"Throwing away a product early and getting the latest one is hugely wasteful, with a high environmental and social impact."

Things we should do: use materials more efficiently; make things more repairable; use renewable energy.

I guess I'd probably also add โ€˜abolish capitalismโ€™ to the list.

My keyboard is about 15 years old โ€“ a classic and still going strong!

The mouse has stopped working though. Hope I can fix it.

""We can do better, Astra Taylor insists. The online world does offer a unique opportunity, but a democratic culture that supports work of lasting value will not spring up from technology alone. If we want the Internet to truly be a peopleโ€™s platform, we will have to make it so."

"Online, just as off-line, attention and influence largely accrue to those who already have plenty of both. A handful of giant companies remain the gatekeepers, while the worst habits of the old media model โ€” the pressure to seek easy celebrity, to be quick and sensational above all โ€” have proliferated in the ad-driven system."

Iโ€™d like to read The Peopleโ€™s Platform by Astra Taylor. Looks pretty on point to me.

"The Internet has been hailed as an unprecedented democratizing force. A place where all can participate equally. But how true is this claim? In a seminal dismantling of techno-utopian visions, The Peopleโ€™s Platform argues that the Internet in fact amplifies real-world inequities at least as much as it ameliorates them."

Enjoying it greatly so far. Itโ€™s a lot lighter than I remember Banksโ€™ books being (maybe Iโ€™m just thinking of The Wasp Factoryโ€ฆ). I came back to it after a recommendation from a friend, of science fiction with some thought experiments around a socialist society. The Culture, a race within the novel, are I believe what one podcast I listened to recently called โ€˜space communistsโ€™, warts and all, so it should be interesting to see how theyโ€™re explored.

My book at the moment is Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. Iโ€™m fairly certain Iโ€™ve read it before, many years ago (my Mum had most of his books when I was growing up) โ€“ long enough ago to remember only brief flashes of it.

We took part in what must have been the first-ever protest for spare parts, in front of the EU institutions. An excellent start to a multi-year European campaign for the right to repair.

@strypey usually, before selling the public infrastructure to the "investors": abandon it, let the citizens get frustrated, let the media say how beneficial private investment could be for improving it and finally sell it at low price...

I learned all about the latest in gaming graphics, including real-time raytracing, and deep learning co-processors that will predict part of what needs rendering in the next frame, from the guy who cut my hair at the barber's today. Pretty wild and completely unnecessary stuff. Apparently he's going to drop ยฃ1,500 on a new graphics card. Also this is how I learn about new technology these days.
