@spongycake @owner fwiw, Matrix is run by a UK non-profit Foundation (https://matrix.org/foundation), and the founding team set up Element (aka New Vector) as a UK for-profit to keep the lights on. The founding team came originally from two startups, one UK & one French, who were acquired by Amdocs (Israel-based telco supplier) in 2010, and who then funded the first three years of Matrix dev (2014-2017). Amdocs never had any creative control, but we are very grateful that they funded us :)

Huge improvements on http://matrix.org's federation performance since we switched over to pyston on May 20th :D

@werwolf fwiw matrix gathers no more metadata than activitypub or xmpp (other than conversation history being the default for matrix, unlike xmpp). and once p2p matrix lands (arewep2pyet.com) it will be even better.
