sadly @kschwabable@twitter.com @FastCompany@twitter.com (and @brbarrett@twitter.com @Wired@twitter.com and @sarahintampa@twitter.com @TechCrunch@twitter.com, and ...) forgot to mention that Firefox Send is hosted on the #Google Cloud Platform, so the authenticity of the JavaScript performing the encryption is ensured only by the TLS certificate there.
Measuring the "Filter Bubble": How Google is influencing what you click
(by DuckDuckGo)
"Now, after the 2016 U.S. Presidential election and other recent elections, there is justified new interest in examining the ways people can be influenced politically online. In that context, we conducted another study to examine the state of Google's filter bubble problem in 2018."
> https://usbeketrica.com/article/small-tech-poison-silicon-valley
Security isn’t about protecting everything from everything. It’s knowing what you’re protecting from what (and what you’re not protecting). That’s why we use threat models.
An analogy: you don’t protect food from the environment; you protect different types of food from different factors of the environment. You might design a heat lamp to protect the freshness of your dinner but a freezer for your ice cream. What you don’t do is design a heat lamp and assume it’ll protect your ice cream also.
Yes, conceptual difference is great between 1/ everyone dropping inadvertently breadcrumbs and grain of sand from their pockets, due to what they agreed to do... and 2/ the same people being taped into by dozen of tubes and hoses and pipes they have no idea are there, that not only grab their essential life energy, but also re-inject (suggestion, control) some dark juice into them. #FuckOffGoogle
Didn't finish reading it yet. Am still on the brilliant conceptual first part.
I think that rhetoric of "dust" or "data exhaust" is misleading if not plain toxic.
This data trail, "behavioral surplus" was engineered. It is *extra* data that is not necessary to operating the services people think they are consenting to use.
New streams of data being generated, extracted, exploited and re-purposed for surveillance and behavioral prediction.
It's a strategy, examples are numerous. Zuboff's book is essential to understand this.
And those working at #Google who protested Project Maven & drone warfare might be surprised to learn that somewhere in Google's chart, there is a guy whose business card reads: "Director of Defense and Intelligence Sales." #FuckOffGoogle
