    @cj @jcgruenhage I think that the mass adoption of MIT/BSD in the go ecosystem is a proof that GPL probably hurts more than it helps when it comes to adoption of software by large entities. Big entities give back patches out of pragmatic reasons, engineers don't want to rebase atop a 10k line diff every time a new version is out. FreeBSD and golang is a great example of this in action. it's okay to have proprietary forks, it's actually probably desirable as they can pay people to improve it.

    @cj @benis followup: i don't think it's ideological as much as it's pragmatic. The wide use of MIT in the ecosystem has really helped its adoption.

    @cj @benis the why part for MIT vs GPL in go is beyond me it's just an observation I have made. it's a social norm that is widely accepted by the go people, the few gpl projects in go suffer because no one wants to deal with their code, i suspect the corporate element is the biggest factor, corporate won't/can't use gpl so MIT is the best route to adoption.
