@allan It's really tragic. There's now a whole genre of stories coming out from this - parents whose kids would still be alive if there had been a more inclusive sex education at the time.

Not that this would be the sole determinant, but for kids that were bullied, confused, or felt broken, this education could have made a difference. Heartbreaking.

Pretty cool new feature on #mastodon. You can filter out toots based on keywords. Get rid of, say uspol, nazi or whatever. You can even put them in as time based to remove spoilers until you get caught up on your favorite show. :D

Bold move--that I support--by Toronto's chief medical officer to call for the decriminalization of all drugs.

I have no interest in taking, nor have I taken, drugs (save alcohol) and I don't think you should take them, but if you did, I'd rather see harm-prevention than criminal prosecution.

My mother-in-law bakes a lot, so I bring in cookies to work weekly.

I'm three months in, and so far the only person to bring in baked goods.

New person starts last week. Today, she brought in banana bread, made from some end-of-life bananas from our cafeteria.

What I love is that *she doesn't know that bringing in baked goods isn't a normal thing here.* She just saw my cookies last week, and assumed.

Anyway, be the change you want to see in the world. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

@ink_slinger I'd be willing to bet that it will be an option longer than we think. Self driving cars seem to be following a path similar to planes, where autopilot works for initially ideal circumstances, then gradually becomes more functional in less-ideal situations. Driving through the lightly tamed country may still require drivers for a while.

@allan I wonder if this driven in part by engineers being particularly conservative relative to the general populace.

40% - yikes. How much potential are we wasting just through closed-mindedness?

this rings so true omg "Contrary to common belief, the volume of face-to-face interaction decreased significantly (approx. 70%) in [two field studies transitions to open office plans], with an associated increase in electronic interaction. In short, rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM." http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/373/1753/20170239

The impact of the ‘open’ workspace on human collaboration
from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
Organizations’ pursuit of increased workplace collaboration has led managers to transform traditional office spaces into ‘open’, transparency-enhancing architectures with fewer walls, doors and other spatial boundaries, yet there is scant direct empirical research on how human interaction patterns change as a result of these architectural changes. In two intervention-based field studies of corporate headquarters transitioning to more open office spaces, we empirically examined—using digital data from advanced wearable devices and from electronic communication servers—the effect of open office architectures on employees' face-to-face, email and instant messaging (IM) interaction patterns. Contrary to common belief, the volume of face-to-face interaction decreased significantly (approx. 70%) in both cases, with an associated increase in electronic interaction. In short, rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM. This is the first study to empirically measure both face-to-face and electronic interaction before and after the adoption of open office architecture. The results inform our understanding of the impact on human behaviour of workspaces that trend towards fewer spatial boundaries. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Interdisciplinary approaches for uncovering the impacts of architecture on collective behaviour’.

@allan The first person who I knew was gay was my mother's coworker. They were both engineers in an engineering firm, and she put it together based on his actions during their business trips (he wanted to go out solo, meaning to a gay bar). He later came out to her - and I think her alone - after she subtly indicated she was okay with it.

This was in the mid-Nineties, when coming out was often dangerous. I sometimes wonder if he would do anything differently today.

Bitcoin miners accidentally prepare Iceland for projects beyond cryptocurrencies. I.E. Deep learning, self-drinving cars, automatic translators etc...

I say good for them. They've got one of the best places in the world for geothermal energy so might as well use it for tech projects that will benefit humanity
