@boneidol @bob @jezra By the time I set up imicroblog.net (coming back soon, I promise!) in late 2011/early 2012, there were about a dozen blog posts from people like JPope, @theru, @gomerx, @parlementum that recorded their setups and made it easier to get going.

@boneidol @bob @jezra I think the big burst happened around the 1.0 upgrade, when Identica was offline for several days and not fully functioning when it first came back. Evan told some complainers to host their own

    quitter.se was older than indy.im by a few months. And before quitter.se existed I remember microb.se https://web.archive.org/web/20090609034651/http://microb.es:80/

Sometime towards the end of 2011 news that identi.ca was changing started spreading. There was a push by lot's of North American users to selfhost. Sites like fragdev appeared. I think the oldest remaining one of those is Gomertronic http://dent.gomertronic.com/notice/1

@jezra started selfhosting at that time ?

    History of indy.im

I joined identi.ca late 2009 ? early 2010 ?  I'd always been interested in self-hosting and maintaining autonomous services, so set up indy.im. in October 2010. There were several motivations at the time.
    * So I could run my own bots.  I had some on identi.ca but they kept being blocked/banned; which was fair enough.
    * As a proxy into twitter - so users could keep their own data, and to obfuscate location/ip addresses
    * as a mobile interface to UK #indymedia. I published  a customised version of the mustard android apk, branded it with an indymedia logo, and hardwired some login credentials in it. Activists could use it on early smart phones and publish short pieces of news and photos to indy.im.  The RSS for these would be pulled into the national/regional indymedia's
    * And as a personal microblog thing.

@ai are you really accessing quitter.no over IPv4?

I still kepp getting https://quitter.no/attachment/1788712 when I try to refresh the page as before. Maybe your ISP as moved you to IPv6? With

    wget -O /dev/null 'https://quitter.no/main/public'

you can check if you access quitter.no's IPv4 or IPv6 address.

@knuthollund hi, I think the situation with IPv4 has not improved yet. Also https://fediverse.network/quitter.no still reports 65% availability.

OTOH I can confirm that quitter.no has been working very well during my whole testing period of almost a week over my #IPv6 socks #proxy.

In case other IPv4 !quitterno users want to try: I just did
    ssh -D 5555 username@some-host-with-ipv6-connectivity
and set the socks proxy settings in firefox to localhost:5555.

Maybe there are still some little oddities even with IPv6, because every few minutes the ssh client logs a message like:
"channel 13: open failed: connect failed: No route to host"
but one doesn't notice anything of that in firefox.

For comparison I also tried a socks-proxy-over-ssh connection to an IPv4-only host and, as expected, firefox will give the same "cannot connect to quitter.no" error pages as via a direct IPv4 connection.

    I will be 18 in 25 minutes

My mom has just come to me and hugged and said things. I think that were the best words of me and her. Yes, both of us. I didn't say a word, but she did it for me. She calls me her friend ('дружочек', which is a Russian word for a little friend, very sweet word. Think of it as in "Karlsson-on-the-Roof", it is a book by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, there are three stories about Karlsson and Lillebror (that young boy who I meant when was writing about 'friend') and all of them are connected with an idea of my existence. Yes, when I haven't even been born my mom was thinking of me as that blue eyed little boy.
I am blue eyed and those stories are my favorite. So are characters. I even used to have proprietary game (yes, non-free games is sad thing), I was a kid and didn't understand a problem, so I was happy with it.
