A judge told OCCRP journalist Khadija Ismayilova today that she had to pay profit taxes for Radio Free Europe, where she used to work. A bogus claim since she was never responsible for the finances of RFE's Azerbaijan office.
Khadija already served 18 months in prison after reporting on the corruption of the first family and other Azerbaijani elites.
Support Khadija and make this case known.

Canadians were treated to an announcement involving the leaders of all three levels of government gushing and fawning about an enlightened urban partnership with a foreign company whose business model is built exclusively on the principle of mass surveillance … Eric Schmidt, Google’s former executive chair, said they had realized their long-running dream for “someone to give us a city and put us in charge.”

The idea that "tolerance" means "must put up with being abused/allow others to be abused" is a philosophy only endorsed and repeated by abusers.
"So much for the tolerant left" translates to "why won't they let us do whatever we want to other people?"

Microsoft word used to come on 7 (or 13) 1.44mb floppies and I thought that was ridiculous because Wordstar fit on one or two. I just removed it from a Mac to free up 2.3Gb of space. It must now have an incomprehensible number of features and overwhelming complexity. #wtfcomputer

The Washington Post has taken an interesting approach to GDPR: They literally put a price tag on privacy.
They give the reader the chance to either get a subscription _with_ tracking for $6 a month, or a tracking-free subscription for $9 a month.
That may feel weird, even unfair, at first, but I think it makes sense. They give people a chance to make a conscious decision to trade privacy for money.
