@jason but is there proof of them selling this telemetry data to third parties? That's just what I'm trying to sort out
@jason I know about Cliqz for the 0.0001% or whatever the number was, but in general as far as I've seen, Mozilla isn't selling user data
@jason Is Mozilla actively selling my user data right now? Do we actually know this as a fact?
Is my history or preferences or other stuff being sold to X company when I'm using Firefox Nightly?
@jason I don't know, the great thing about this is that it's your opinion so none of this matters for anyone else including me.
I don't want to get into an argument but I'm always just interested in people's decisions/thoughts especially when they post it on a public forum like here.
We have differing opinions and that's cool
@jason I understand your points and I know where you are coming from, but I just feel like Mozilla is a company trying to survive in a world full of advertising and tracking.
They are flawed, as is any large company, but I think for the most part Mozilla still is in the right, pushing for web privacy - absolutely moreso than any other company in the same space.
They've made some silly decisions, but the majority of users haven't been affected by them at all
@jason Firefox is privacy respecting and they are the best option for the majority of consumers today that want to retain some sort of privacy , that's a fact. They've run some experiments in the past that have been awful ideas, but in my current Firefox setup I don't doubt at all that my privacy is being respected and not sent off to some random third party.
@jason Once again, my biggest question is how do they make money to support their devs without "selling the opportunity to be the default search engine to the highest bidder" ? You can use alternative browsers built by a small team of great open source devs but will it last longer than a year? Will it be supported by modern web apps? Will it update within 24 hours when a major web vulnerability is found?
@jason not trying to argue with you specifically but it's just an odd dilemma. I personally feel Mozilla is ethically in the right still, I believe and trust all of their products. I send them telemetry in Firefox, and Firefox focus on mobile as well. It's by far the most pleasant experience while keeping my data away from big data mining or advertising companies and because everything is open source we can spot iffy things and block them easily.
@jason so essentially the point is, there is not many options for them to make money in the current structure besides their current methods. Is the world better off without Mozilla existing? Even if they have 'hidden' motives, they are at least putting privacy issues in the public eye and are absolutely a better option than Chrome.
I guess I don't understand this weird hatred in some of the tech world for Mozilla when they are absolutely the lesser of the tech evils
@jason like what browser do you use day to day?
I know a lot of people critizise Firefox and it's experiments while actively using Chrome and supporting Google's complete anti-privacy efforts.
You can use old or forked Firefox versions but then you are prone to security issues which is by far a huge problem than privacy
@jason Is there a more ethical way for a browser like Firefox to survive? I'm honestly curious if you or someone has better thoughts. Sure you could do less data tracking, but still Mozilla is still in my mind the #1 browser company in terms of privacy no questions asked
@jason I always see this backlash on hacker news on every firefox thread and I think it's quite over exaggerated. I'm all for privacy and prefer FOSS when possible but there is a certain point where I think 'how else can they make money'.
.
@Toxic_Flange valid point!! Thanks for your thoughts on this
@jason may i ask what ethics are causing you to avoid mozilla stuff? I feel like there is no better option browser wise if you care for ethics / privacy that is well supported
I scheduled a few job interviews this week for contract work positions, just had my first this morning and it went fantastic and I got the gig. I have two more tomorrow but I dont know if I should still go through with them...
This first one is everything I wanted essentially so I don't want to interview and get another companies hopes up....
@thurloat @ink_slinger I like Nordiq a lot
Also also anything related to Buddhism / Taoism / Eastern Philosophy I'm keen on as well. Especially books that don't just lay down facts but rather incorporate the values into a storyline.
Think sorta like Dharma Bums by Kerouac (I read a lot of Kerouac)
Also looking for some books about eco-friendly farming, environmentalism, etc. For example, love the book about Patagonia (company) called Let My People Go Surfing.
Great mix of business ethics, environmental impacts, etc
Hi all, looking for some more book recommendations.
Currently almost finished Sapiens, Big Sur (Kerouac), and The Martian.
If there is some sort of mix between all three of the above novels I would probably be in love
