    @abacus Freedom is a constant struggle, and the net has never been neutral. But if it becomes significantly less neutral and there is corporate lockdown then moving to P2P and trying to get everything through layer 2 might be the way to go. The more people can control the last mile the better, so community mesh networks wherever possible.

    New here! I'm an ARPA member of SDF, as of about 2 days ago! Loving the site and I'm a big follower of open-source software, philosophy and whatnot. Unfortunately I have to use Windows for my printer... but I may figure out a way to use TrueOS or OpenBSD with it. Anyways, nice to meet you all!

    as an SDF mastodon user, i don’t feel worried about inevitable attacks on the federation (e.g. misinfo campaigns, infight summoning) because i have so very many fallbacks in place - our comroom our bboard our irc our xmpp voip ham anonradio-stream mailx talk write motd etc ... maybe it’s important to remember that most instances are not built on a myriad alternative social protocols. we could take special care to be as involved as someone whose instance being f’d means the entire org’s end.

    which active instances have something else going on? e.g. @tildetown @SDF freedombone EFF FSS ... i imagine a campaign to get some kind of deeper-into-the-server tutorial for interested instance managers. although tildetown was first a pubnix and later a mastodon, if we imagine that happened in reverse it provides a great model for what i suggest. would there be interest among sysadmins? benefits would include e.g. at SDF during qvitter you needed a registered shell!

    I mean such a PERSON would be an EXPERT who understands all the CODE STUFF but i just listen and learn a little everyday. THAT'S fun to me as well, but not enough UNLESS i read the MANUAL!
