Yo, @ erdanton ... what's up? 😃

From leo@twit.social on Mastodon: I sincerely hope Threads follows through with their plan to federate. It will give other Fediverse users a controlled pipeline to the zeitgeist. By judiciously following Threaders here we’ll be able to have safe access to the people, news, and brands we could never convince to use Mastodon without having to submerse ourselves into the massive, undifferentiated flood of info over there. This is a good thing, yes?

Did the upgrade of our # Mastodon instance to the latest stable release today. Made a mess of my private branch in my local git clone, but recovered nicely and all seems well... FOR NOW.

From matthewfeickert@hep.social on Mastodon: If you’re going to be at # SciPy2023 or # PyHEPdev2023 and would like a pyhf sticker come find me to chat!

Shout out to @ kolb ... how's it going?
-
Shout out to @ Wedemmoez in the Fediverse! How are things?

Are you seeing this poll right now? (a simple test of our Mastodon instance)

I’m a physicist. Last week’s gravitational waves announcement sent me reeling. https://www. washingtonpost.com/opinions/20 23/07/06/gravitational-waves-new-view-universe/ Opinion by Katie Mack at the # PerimeterInstitute

Anybody else in the fediverse on Mastodon have the problem where images from other site feeds are listed as "Not Available"? They can only be seen by clicking on them and going to the remote site. This HAS to be a setting on my own server. But I have not been able to find it. Advice welcome. Looking for input from active Mastodon site admins and/or developers. There was an issue on this from 2020 but it claims to be resolved. I am using the latest stable server release.

Had an awesome 12 hour shift in the underground lab yesterday. Took time to visit the future site of the # PICO -500 experiment. It will be constructed inside this water shield tank, formerly home to the MINICLEAN # darkmatter search experiment. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/13e43e9cee837974a0e57ca319a8d9a4a178271a134fcd9b7fe0c12c32f36feb/view

From evan@cosocial.ca on Mastodon: What can you do for the fediverse? Make it a lively place people want to come back to! - Welcome new people. - Make connections. - Post photos of the things happening in your life. - Post videos of what you see. - Share your thoughts and opinions in original posts. - Participate in conversations. - Think twice before replying. - Boost good toots! - Invite friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and help them get started. - Give concrete, helpful advice. Most of all: be here, not there.

From StellaLunaObs@mastodon.online on Mastodon: SUNSPOT COUNTS HIT A 21-YEAR HIGH: It's official: The average # sunspot number in June 2023 hit a 21-year high. Solar Cycle 25 has shot past its predecessor, # Solar Cycle 24, and may be on pace to rival some of the stronger cycles of the 20th century. Full story @ Spaceweather.com

Womp womp. The gutting of the # twitterverse continues unabated. Joking aside, it breaks my heart to watch the tools I once used to manage my social network engagement wither and die as a corruption tears through the heart of the underlying theory and architecture. This is like watching a social virus spread and kill, choking and murdering the things that people worked for years to build. Let's hope the same love of building might flourish on new open systems. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/59eee0c7ae4ab07bbefd6dbd76689211445f5b6936843ac896e7401d794c4137/view

Since there are a bunch of # new folks in the # fediverse since a week ago, perhaps a re- # introduction is useful to help people connect with # scientists I am a # physicist , # Professor of Physics at # QueensUniversity , and Research Group Manager at # SNOLAB . # SNOLAB is a National Research Facility in # Canada and the deepest, cleanest laboratory in the world, ideal for careful work. I study # neutrinos and hunt for the composition of # darkmatter I am a published # writer and a serviceable # runner .

It's warm in # Sudbury today, but I managed a nice run. It's very humid, but not too hot (yet). Did not manage to run the full 4K but happy I got out. One foot in front of the other ... and repeat! I am really hoping we get some rain this afternoon. The South End of # Sudbury has not been winning the lottery on rain this weekend, even while other parts of Greater Sudbury did see some.

These are the only tweets I need right now, and I am not limited to 600 a day. The birds let me experience as many as I like. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/598172316af120364d95afa8da4bc7f0c058573deaf6fee325bece237f693872/view

An excellent perspective from my colleague and boss at # SNOLAB , and particularly close to my heart as graduate support has been a deep concern, and project, of mine since before I was Physics Graduate Director and then Department Head at SMU in Dallas ... and the challenge is even bigger here in Canada: "The Research Economy Constrains the Impact ad Pace of Canadian Innovation - CSPC" https:// sciencepolicy.ca/posts/researc h-economy-constrains-impact-pace-canadian-innocation/ # phd # graduatestudents # livingwage # science
